The latest vignette for Morbius features star Jared Leto confirming that the multiverse has been ripped open, teasing appearances of several established characters.
The brief trailer includes Leto discussing his upcoming film while priming fans to see some familiar faces that have already appeared in Sony's Spider-Man Universe. "In the film version of Morbius, he's part of a much larger universe. The multiverse has officially opened and there's all kinds of opportunities for villains to meet up." While the actor never explicitly name drops another character, fans believe he is referring to Michael Keaton's Vulture, who first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man: Homecoming.
While Keaton is confirmed to appear in Morbius, the other possible cameo could be Tom Hardy's Venom. During the vignette, a scene from the film features a police officer examining a crime scene, mentioning that the severity of the situation resembles "that thing in San Francisco," referring to the 2018 film Venom. Many also believe that Spider-Man will make an appearance in Morbius, although which live-action incarnation remains a mystery. Trailers for the movie include references to Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland, confusing fans as to which universe the Living Vampire calls his home.
Director Daniel Espinosa recently confirmed that Peter Parker does exist within the world of Morbius and that the film will be faithful to how Marvel weaves together its various comic books. "Of course! I mean, in almost all Spider-Verse or, you know, the (universes) that existed in the Marvel universe, if you read the comic books, the whole idea of that kind of – the Marvel string theory, if you would call it that," said Espinosa. "It's very related to, if you remember, the alternative Seinfelds. You have a world where you have the same characters, and it's ALL of the characters, but they are slightly different."
Leto himself has discussed how he'd like to approach a potential Spider-Man cameo, noting that he believes Morbius and the Web-Head would make an excellent team. "Well, I tell you that I would love to get in the ring with Spider-Man and I think Tom Holland is amazing," said Leto. "We'd make quite a dynamic duo, I guess."
After several substantial delays, Morbius will finally fly into theaters on April 1.
