The first trailer for Sony Pictures' Morbius gave fans their first look at Jared Leto's Spider-Man-villain-turned-solo-star. The footage gives fans of the living vampire, Sony's Marvel Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe a lot to sink their teeth into. Here's our breakdown of the trailer and everything important that it showed.

What's Morbius About?

The story the trailer sets up is quite similar to Morbius' origin in the comics. Plagued by a rare illness of the blood, brilliant scientist Michael Morbius experiments to discover a cure that will save his life. The character in the trailer is seen caring for sick children and speaking at public events. Morbius seems, in general, to be regarded as a well-intentioned expert fighting for a good cause.

Unlike the comics, though, the trailer depicts the illness as infecting Morbius from a much earlier age, confining him to crutches and making his body physically frail. A shot of a child in a room of hospital beds playing chess hints at Morbius' advanced intellect even from an early age, but also shows the sadness that will drive Morbius to such incredible lengths for his experiments. After studying bats in his lab, he travels to a misty land where he waits at the mouth of a cave and opens a wound to attract a swarm of bats. Everyone else on the expedition seems scared -- but not Morbius.

Morbius Gains Incredible Powers

Firmly within the superhero tradition, the trailer shows off some of Morbius' powers. While he was frail and sickly before, after his experiments his body ripples with muscles as he shows off his enhanced strength and speed. Those may be standard powers for the superhero set, but Morbius also shows off his echolocation, sending out vibrations that scan the environment around him.

In addition to those other powers, Morbius wields sharp claws like deadly weapons, climbs along walls very much like the spider foe he is known for fighting and seems, at one point, to bound about in clouds of fog as though teleporting or stepping through the shadows.

Spider-Man, Murderer?

Although the news is a little less shocking after the screenshot was already previously leaked, there's no missing the moment in the trailer when Morbius walks by a picture of Spider-Man with the word "MURDERER" graffitied across it. The image bears a striking similarity to the Raimi-era costume included in the PS4 Spider-Man video game, although the word "murderer" seems like a definite reference to the ending of Spider-Man: Far From Home in which the titular hero was framed for the murder of that film's villain Quentin Beck/Mysterio.

Morbius Becomes The Living Vampire

The trailer does not shy away from comic accuracy when it comes to Morbius' look, either. While Jared Leto wears little makeup while portraying Morbius throughout much of the trailer, the end reveals his full transformation into the living vampire, his skin pale white, his eyes burning red and his features sharpened to those of a bat.

Of course, that doesn't mean this will be some straight horror film, as an easy-to-miss reference toward the end of the trailer mentions how Morbius has been "playing the good guy" for much of the story. While Morbius' final appearance and much of the trailer's trappings may have the feel of a horror film, there is still clearly a superhero center lurking in the shadows.

Michael Keaton Appears, But Is He The Vulture?

The reference to Morbius being a good guy comes from a familiar face, and serves as the trailer's biggest bomb. While the character is not named in the trailer, actor Michael Keaton is already well known for his role as Adrian Toomes/The Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming. His smile even lights up with the same red lighting as in his famous identity-discovery scene from Homecoming, and the connection comes as massive news for the Sony flick.

While the predecessor film Venom was restrained in its references to Spider-Man, the trailer's direct connection specifically to the Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man comes as a shock. Marvel and Sony's disputes with one another over the intellectual property were covered in detail throughout 2019, but the new trailer comes as promise that a quid pro quo between the studios could be seen that would mark a whole new chapter in the world of cinematic universes.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa, Morbius stars Jared Leto as the titular character, Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft, Tyrese Gibson as Agent Stroud and Jared Harris in an undisclosed role. The film is set to be released July 31.
