Sony Pictures appears to have its own superhero film universe comprised of villains from Spider-Man's rogues gallery, though Spidey himself has never appeared in any of those films. Morbius director Daniel Espinosa recently assured fans that the Wall-Crawler does exist in this shared universe.

In an interview with Cinemablend, Espinosa said, "Of course! I mean, in almost all Spider-Verse or, you know, the (universes) that existed in the Marvel universe, if you read the comic books, the whole idea of that kind of – the Marvel string theory, if you would call it that. It's very related to, if you remember, the alternative Seinfelds. You have a world where you have the same characters, and it's ALL of the characters, but they are slightly different."

Several recent Marvel films and television series have begun to explore the multiverse, including Spider-Man: No Way Home and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The idea that a similar superhero, or more specifically a similar Spider-Man, can be represented in separate universes is a reasonable expectation.

"So in almost all verses, you have Spider-Man, or a Fantastic Four, or a Tony Stark, or a Morbius," said Espinosa. "But they will be different in tone. That's not quite the way that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (is) approaching the idea, but they're remaining to some core truth. Then you have the second kind of legend, which is about the totem. Which is that, in all universes, there is a spider totem. Which means that in all universes, there has to be a Spider-Man. Or a Spider-Woman."

Viewers had a hint at the Morbius Spider-Man in the film's trailer. On a city wall, shown for only a moment, is the image of Spider-Man with the word "murderer" painted over it. While it isn't clear if the reference to murder is a throwback to events in Spider-Man: Far From Homeit should be noted that the same Sony studio that created Spider-Man: No Way Home, the sequel to the aforementioned film, has produced Morbius.

The multiverse is a continuously developing concept within Marvel films in general, and not much is known about the Spider-Man that exists within Morbius. Several versions of Spider-Man could be possible contenders, including the Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Toby Maguire versions, but with an infinite number of universes it could also be a Spider-Man audiences haven't seen before.

Morbius is scheduled to hit theaters on April 1.
