Along with its first official trailer, Sony has released the synopsis for Morbius, the next live-action Spider-Man-adjacent film.

The film follows Michael Morbius, played by Jared Leto, who is a scientist with a rare blood disorder. On the desperate journey to find a cure, Morbius conducts a deadly experiment that transforms him into a living vampire.

The official synopsis is below:

One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar® winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease.

Morbius is the second standalone film in Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters, which launched with Venom in 2018. Other potential films on Sony's slate include those centered on Black Cat, Nightwatch, Kraven the Hunter and Silver Sable.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa, Morbius stars Jared Leto as the titular character, Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft, Tyrese Gibson as Agent Stroud and Jared Harris in an undisclosed role. The film arrives July 31.
