The official runtime for Sony's next Marvel spinoff film, Morbius, has been revealed.
According to the film's official page on Cinemark Theatres' website, Morbius clocks in at one hour and 48 minutes (i.e. 108 minutes) long. In order words, Morbius is just over 10 minutes longer than Sony's most recent Marvel spinoff, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which Cinemark lists as being one hour and 37 minutes (i.e. 97 minutes) long.
One of the biggest talking points surrounding Let There Be Carnage upon its release back in October was its breakneck pace, which came about as a result of its relatively short runtime. After all, Let There Be Carnage is about 15 minutes shorter than its direct predecessor, 2018's Venom, which clocks in at one hour and 52 minutes (i.e. 112 minutes) long and is already rather fast-paced in its own right.
Moreover, it's becoming increasingly rare for a big-budget superhero flick to run less than two hours. For example, of the 27 movies that have been made as part of Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far, only six -- The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Thor: The Dark World, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange and Ant-Man and the Wasp -- have clocked in at under two hours long. And even then, absolutely none have dipped below one hour and 50 minutes. Even Sony's own recent MCU film Spider-Man: No Way Home, a co-production with Marvel Studios, comes in at a whopping two hours and 28 minutes (i.e. 148 minutes) long.
This is worth noting, as while Morbius is a Sony spinoff, the Jared Leto-led film does have apparent ties to the MCU. Not only did No Way Home effectively smash in the forbidden door between the MCU and Sony's Spider-Man multiverse, but Morbius' official trailers have featured actor Michael Keaton, who is seemingly reprising his role as Adrian Toomes/Vulture from Sony and Marvel's 2017 MCU film Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Morbius' most recent trailer also sees main protagonist Dr. Michael Morbius namecheck fellow Sony character Venom, who has his own connection to the MCU. Nevertheless, while Marvel movies definitely tend to skew longer these days, between Let There Be Carnage and now Morbius, it looks as though Sony intends on keeping its spinoffs relatively short and sweet for the time being.
Morbius rises in theaters on Jan. 28, 2022.
