Reintroducing Michael Keaton to the Marvel world with Morbius is a genuine career highlight for Jared Leto.

During a production release, Leto, who plays the titular living vampire, remarked on the pleasure of working with Keaton on his film and how it might connect to Marvel's ongoing multiverse project between studios. "One of the great things about being part of the larger universe is you get to plant Easter eggs – you get to pull on some other characters to jump in and join your party and surprise people," he stated. "I couldn’t think of someone I'd rather work with than Michael Keaton – he's one of my favorites."

While it's been confirmed that Keaton will reprise his Adrian Toomes/Vulture role from Spider-Man: Homecoming in Morbius, the question of whether this Toomes is same character remains unclear. The second trailer for Morbius seemingly hinted at an alliance between Dr. Michael Morbius and Toomes per the latter's request, but it also established that the film takes place on Venom's Earth, which is not the same dimension as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This divide was temporarily breached in between Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which Eddie Brock and Venom were briefly transported to the MCU by Doctor Strange's spell before getting pulled back to their own universe, leaving behind only a small drop of the Symbiote. Keaton has personally admitted that he finds the Sony-Marvel film interrelation confusing, comparing such a breakdown of events to someone "explaining quantum physics right now to me."

First introduced 1971's The Amazing Spider-Man #101, Morbius the Living Vampire has since transitioned from villain to reoccurring anti-hero in Spider-Man's world. His most notable adaptation to date was in Spider-Man: The Animated Series but, while the character's likeness was accurately translated, his abilities were heavily altered due to the show's young audience. As a result, Morbius could not drink people's blood, but instead drained plasma from their bodies using suction cup-like devices on his hands. The Morbius film, by comparison, has heavily emphasized Morbius' struggle to control his bloodlust during its vignettes and trailers.

Keaton, who famously played Batman in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman blockbuster and its sequel Batman Returns, will reprise his role as an older Bruce Wayne for DC's The Flash. Keaton will also play Batman in the upcoming Batgirl movie, co-starring alongside Leslie Grace as the titular character and a returning J.K. Simmons as her father Commissioner Gordon. A recent series of photos revealed a glimpse of Keaton's Batman outfit, which still resembles his costume from the Tim Burton movies.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa, Morbius releases in theaters April 1.
