Morbius director Daniel Espinosa clarifies why certain scenes referencing Spider-Man were included in the trailer but not in the final cut of the film.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, Espinosa explained that the process for creating a movie and a trailer are related yet different procedures. "I mean, it's funny, because when you do a movie of this sort, there are some people that make the trailer and then you make the movie and when you make a movie, you always cut out things," said Espinosa. "For example, if you look at Safe House, you have these, when they're in this war room, I have many different kinds of detective parts of that story that got cut out." The filmmaker goes on to defend the final version of Morbius, stating that "what's in the movie is what I thought should be in the movie."

Morbius' marketing campaign included several overt references to cinematic iterations of Spider-Man. An early trailer featured a wall of graffiti that highlighted what appeared to be Toby Maguire's Wall-Crawler. Other smaller nods include a panoramic shot of the city where a building with the Oscorp logo is visible while other close-ups teased the existence of the Daily Bugle in Morbius. None of these shots were used in the final version of the film.

Another significant change came in the form of Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes aka The Vulture. The footage of the Marvel Cinematic Universe villain, who first appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming, was replaced for Morbius' much-maligned post-credits scene.

While Spider-Man doesn't visually appear in Morbius, Espinosa confirmed that a version of the character does exist in Sony's growing cinematic universe, even if it's a version fans aren't expecting. "Of course! I mean, in almost all Spider-Verse or, you know, the (universes) that existed in the Marvel universe... you have a world where you have the same characters, and it's ALL of the characters, but they are slightly different," said Espinosa.

While it's currently unknown which Peter Parker will debut in Sony's Spider-Man universe, Morbius star Jared Leto wants to go head-to-head with the MCU's Wall-Crawler. "Well, I think Tom Holland and I have a date with destiny," said Leto. "I think he is, by the way, just a phenomenal actor. What a great Spider-Man. I really think he's just a terrific talent."

Morbius is now in theaters.
