The cast surrounding Sony's Morbius, starring Jared Leto, is finally starting to take shape.

After The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Tyrese Gibson would play an FBI agent who is on the hunt for the living vampire, the outlet also revealed the roles for Matt Smith, Adria Arjona and Jared Harris.

Smith, who played the eleventh incarnation of The Doctor from the Doctor Who series, will portray Loxias Crown, the main villain of the film. Smith's character might be a variation of a man named Crown, a villain featured in the X-Men and Spider-Man comics who also went by the name Hunger. However, THR describes Crown as Morbius' best friend, who also suffers from the same blood disease afflicting Morbius. Hunger had enhanced abilities and vampire-like powers.

Adria Arjona, who played Jules Reyes in Pacific Rim: Uprising and Anathema in the series Good Omens, plays Martine Bancroft, the love interest for Morbius. In the comics, Bancroft was the fiancée of Morbius, but after dying came back as an actual vampire.

Jared Harris, who played Professor James Moriarty in the 2001 film Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, is cast as Morbius' mentor.

Created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane, Dr. Michael Morbius' first appearance was October 1971 in The Amazing Spider-Man #101. In the issue, Spider-Man's attempt to remove his spider-powers only results in Peter Parker growing an additional four arms. Spidey later meets Dr. Morbius, a scientist who is trying to find a cure for his affliction. Although he has a need to ingest blood and possesses superhuman abilities, he is also immune to religious artifacts and can survive being in sunlight. Because of his partial abilities, he's considered to be a "living" vampire.

Although Morbius made his debut in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man, it has still yet to be announced if Spidey will be making an appearance in the film. The live-action version of Venom, starring Tom Hardy, was a box office success earning over $850 million globally, without Spider-Man needing to be in the film.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa (Life) from a script written by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama (Lost in Space), Sony's Morbius stars Jared Leto as the titular character, Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft and Jared Harris. The film will hit theaters on July 31, 2020.
