Fans got their first look at the Moon Knight television series at Disney+ Day. The short teaser gave them a feel for the dark niche the show is carving out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It does this by establishing a heavy atmosphere, showcasing the mental instability at the heart of the character.

The teaser is frightening enough to feel more like a horror story than a superhero series. That's especially true of the scene where Oscar Isaac's Marc Spector appears to be stalked by a creature in a museum. That could be a tease for two crucial figures from Spector's comic book past.

Who Is Moon Knight's God, Khonshu?

Moon Knight Khonshu 1

The most obvious candidate for the creature in Moon Knight's teaser is the Egyptian God Khonshu (who was revealed to be an Elder God that predates the Earth during the King in Black crossover). Khonshu was introduced in Moon Knight's origin story, by Doug Moench and Bill Sienkiewicz, as the character's patron. After a losing battle with fellow mercenary Bushman left him mortally wounded, Spector was resurrected by Khonshu. Attempting to atone for his transgressions, Spector became Khonshu's avatar on Earth. Using four separate identities to gather information, which reflected different aspects of Khonshu, Spector fought evil as Moon Knight.

Khonshu was initially depicted as a benevolent god in Moon Knight and during the vigilante's time with the West Coast Avengers. Their relationship eventually became contentious, with Spector turning his back on Khonshu, at one point believing him to be a figment of his imagination. When he isn't choosing other avatars to replace Spector, Khonshu has treated him as an expendable cog in his plans. That includes his battle with the Avengers in 2020's Age of Khnoshu storyline by Jason Aaron and Javier Garron, where he took things like Ghost Rider's Hell Charger and Mjolnir as part of Khonshu's battle against Mephisto.

Whether he turns out to be a figment of Spector's imagination or an actual supernatural entity in the Disney+ show, Khonshu's importance to Moon Knight's origin means he has to be adapted into the story somehow. The show might transport Spector's first meeting with Khonshu, and subsequent transformation into a costumed superhero, from an Egyptian tomb to the museum where Spector's being stalked in the teaser. While Khonshu makes the most sense, there is another supernatural being from Spector's past that could fit the bill. Their comic book history goes back even farther than Khonshu's.

How Does Werewolf By Night Connect to Moon Knight?

Moon Knight Marvel Werewolf By Night

Moon Knight's origin story was published years after his first appearance in Werewolf By Night #32. That story was also written by Doug Moench, with art by Don Perlin and Al Milgrom. He was also a mercenary in his first appearance, in this case, a werewolf hunter working for the Committee to capture the title character. Moon Knight working for a villainous group was later retconned into him going undercover for intel.

This seems like a footnote in Moon Knight's history, but it could point to a connection between the series and another Disney+ show. Among the many Marvel shows coming to the streaming service in 2022 is a Halloween special starring Gael García Bernal as a werewolf. It's expected that Bernal will be playing Jack Russell, Werewolf By Night's titular lycanthrope. One reason is that, of the existing Marvel werewolves, Russell is easier to adapt to the MCU than Man-Wolf. Another could be that his comic book ties to Moon Knight.

Moon Knight's grim and gritty sensibilities clash wildly with most of the rest of the MCU. Its focus on Marc Spector's multiple personalities doesn't mesh with lighter characters like Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk. Doctor Strange and the Scarlet Witch might fit into his corner of the universe better, but they're going to be busy with their own multiversal problems. Although he has been an Avenger on multiple occasions, Spector tends to work best as a street-level hero in the comics. His contemporaries in that field are currently stuck in the limbo of Marvel's Netflix shows.

A Werewolf By Night appearance could allow for the kind of connection that's at the heart of the MCU without dragging in characters that don't fit into Moon Knight's milieu. It might also tie both of them into whatever Mahershala Ali's Blade is up to in the MCU, assuming reports that he will appear in Moon Knight turn out to be true. If Moon Knight sticks closer to his monster hunting origin in the MCU, he'll be a good candidate for a potential Midnight Sons team-up.

To see who's stalking Marc Spector in the museum, Moon Knight arrives on Disney+ in 2022.
