The following contains spoilers for Moon Knight Season 1, Episode 2, "Summon the Suit," which premiered Wednesday, April 6 on Disney+.
The silliest trope in comic book movies has been superhero landings. Superhuman characters such as Superman, Wonder Woman and Thor bring famous poses to life from decades of comics. These landings have also become a staple for other Marvel and DC characters who've only just started becoming bigger parts of pop culture, and as a result, sticking the landing -- or lack thereof -- has become a bit of a running gag.
Black Widow had Yelena Belova making fun of Natasha Romanoff's poses, only to realize she did the same with her landings in the field. Deadpool 2 actually started the gag, which got even more meta when it was ridiculed in Ryan Reynolds' The Adam Project. In its second episode, Moon Knight also took a shot at this trope, with Oscar Isaac's geeky Steven Grant (whose origin may have just been revealed) proving he wasn't as ready to be a superhero as he thought.
This hilarious moment occurred in Season 1, Episode 2, "Summon the Suit," when Steven found himself chased by an Egyptian jackal. He didn't want to let Marc Spector take over to help him escape, because he didn't know if the mercenary would go on yet another killing spree. However, as he fled the beast and Arthur Harrow's cult, Steven fell off a building -- which led to Khonshu yelling at him to summon the suit. Steven was reluctant, banging his head on a pipe as he fell... but right when he was about to hit the floor, he landed with perfection.
That's because he did indeed summon the much-replicated business suit, becoming Mr. Knight so he could stick the landing and survive the tumble. And make no mistake, his touchdown was Olympic-quality and everything a superhero could have hoped for. Steven even looked up -- as if mimicking Black Widow's poise and confidence -- but his newfound sense of purpose went awry immediately afterward. Clearly dazed by hitting the pipe, he started flailing around if he were inebriated in one of Moon Knight's most hilarious moments. His reaction was understandable, though, given the state of panic on top of the impact with a large metal object.
Aside from being funny, the scene also showed that Mr. Knight was fallible -- and foreshadowed how Marc would be vulnerable later in the episode, leading him to get impaled when he was inside Anton's compound. Despite the suit, the avatars melding with Khonshu weren't perfect even in their super-powered form. Marc didn't know Mr. Knight existed, but Steven opted to trust this form moving forward. He felt Marc was monstrous, but with this more suave and dapper suit, he hoped he could control his powers better.
With only two episodes of Moon Knight remaining, no one knows if Steven/Marc will get another opportunity to try and stick the classic superhero landing. It's possible the scene from "Summon The Suit" was a one-off gag meant to poke fun at this ridiculous genre trope. But if there's room for it, having him nail the landing the second time might be an interesting way to show how far Steven/Marc has come in his journey.
