The following contains major spoilers for Moon Knight #15, available now from Marvel Comics.

Writer Jed Mackay has introduced a lot of changes for Moon Knight in their currently ongoing run. The Fist of Khonshu's newest venture is his sort-of-small business, The Midnight Mission, where he helps members of his neighborhood with supernatural threats. Now, Moon Knight is making possibly the biggest change in his life thus far, and it indicates a new way Moon Knight is going to handle conflict in life.

After having an open and honest conversation with Steven Grant and Jake Lockley, Marc Spector decides to work in tandem with his alters to help take down a clan of vampires. Moon Knight and his alters have worked as a team before like in Jeff Lemire's run in 2016. However, Moon Knight #15 (Jed Mackay, Alejandro Cappuccio, Rachelle Rosenberg, and VC's Cory Petit) has the titular hero do something he's never done before; embrace his dissociative identity disorder and be open about it with his friends.

moon knight D.I.D

Marc Spector's D.I.D is known to some other superheroes, but Marc hasn't sat down and talked about his D.I.D before. He's mentioned having problems with his mental health, but he hasn't gone into further detail than that. Part of this secrecy stems from Marc's nature as he's certainly not the best at communication. However, another aspect is that Moon Knight's mental health has usually been met with scorn and anger. One example of this is his ex-wife Marlene Alraune who has walked out on Spector multiple times because of his condition that she sees as "dangerous".

The stigma surrounding dissociative identity disorder exists in the comic universe, as well as the real world, and it means that it's frankly safer for Marc to keep it under wraps. This is why Marc's decision to reveal his condition to his friends shouldn't be taken lightly. Thankfully for Moon Knight, his peers' reactions to the information are a far cry from how it's been received in the past. Soldier, Moon Knight's muscle doesn't pry into Marc's condition, saying that it doesn't affect his loyalty to the Midnight Mission.

Hunter's Moon, Khonshu's new avatar and technically the official Fist of Khonshu, also expresses support for Marc's confession, even though he disapproves of his association with vampires. However, the most emotional reaction is from Reese, Moon Knight's assistant. She tells him that his past doesn't make him a bad person and that she doesn't care about who he was before the founding of the Midnight Mission. She knows who he is now which leads to a hug between the pair. This acceptance has a positive impact on Marc as noted by his therapist, Dr. Stermen, as Marc has dropped a bit of his serious facade to make some jokes.

reese and mr knight talk

This issue presents multiple possibilities for Moon Knight's future. The overall agreement that Marc, Steven, and Jake made with each other may mean the alters may appear more often in Moon Knight stories. Readers might see Steven or Jake explicitly interact with the inhabitants of the Midnight Mission, and even fight threats together seamlessly. However, the more important point - Marc's openness about his D.I.D is making him more open as a person.

Maybe by allowing himself to be honest about his condition, Marc is choosing to finally let go of his more secretive past and finish his transition away from the mindless servant of Khonshu into his own defined hero. This could usher in a new era for Moon Knight as this newfound openness presents a new way for Moon Knight to handle crime assisted by his alters and be more open to the world around him.
