Moon Knight head writer Jeremy Slater revealed that a character from another Disney+/Marvel Studios series was almost the Fist of Khonshu's love interest instead of Layla El-Faouly.

During an appearance on House of R, Slater discussed some ideas from the original pitch for Moon Knight. "There were a lot of specifics in the pitch that didn't wind up working in the show," he said. According to Slater, Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Cox) from Hawkeye was originally intended as Marc Spector's (Oscar Isaac) love interest, much like in the comics, instead of Layla El-Faouly (May Calamawy).

"At the time, Echo was go to be our love interest, solely based on the fact that [the writers] knew Marvel liked the character of Echo and was trying to find a show to put her in," Slater said. However, this plan did not go thorough as Maya "didn't work at all for the story [the production team was] telling," a feeling Marvel Studios shared. "[Marvel was] like, 'You know what, we've got this Hawkeye show and we feel like she would fit in a lot better there…,'" concluded Slater, "and we were like, 'Oh, thank God.'"

Another idea from Moon Knight's original pitch was Moon Knight's comic archenemy, Bushman, serving as the show's villain rather than Arthur Harrow. Slater added that he thought Bushman was "going to be possessed by an Egyptian god by the end of it, and you'd have a big sort of avatar battle."

Slater has previously addressed why they chose to use Arthur Harrow instead of Bushman as the series' main villain. "[Moon Knight's] only recognizable villain was Bushman, who just felt too close to Black Panther's Erik Killmonger," he said. "So we decided to invent a villain instead. Ethan Hawke in particular was instrumental in creating Harrow." Despite this, Moon Knight still mentioned Bushman in its penultimate episode. Isaac has also expressed interest in seeing Bushman join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Echo will soon star in her own solo series on Disney+, with Hawkeye star Alaqua Cox reprising the role. Plot details about Echo are currently under lock and key, though a recent report revealed that the series will take place in two Georgia towns as opposed to New York City. It has also been rumored that Cox's Hawkeye co-stars Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld will appear in the show as well, reprising their Hawkeye roles as Clint Barton and Kate Bishop.

Hawkeye is available to stream on Disney+ and Moon Knight's series finale premieres on the service on May 4.
