The following contains spoilers for Moon Knight Season 1 Episodes 5-6, "Asylum" and "Gods & Monsters," now streaming on Disney+.

Over the course of Moon Knight, Layla El-Faouly proved to be much more than Marc Spector's wife. She cut a truly heroic figure, taking on Marc and Steven Grant's mission to stop Arthur Harrow and Ammit, especially after Marc/Steven were killed. Layla's contributions to the fight against Harrow and Ammit culminated in the finale when she gained her own powers by channeling the goddess Tawaret, becoming an updated version of the Scarlet Scarab.

Much to the delight of fans, Layla was a major factor in helping to take down Harrow's cult and every bit the superhero fans had wanted her to be. There was even the idea that she should get her own spinoff, especially with Moon Knight not returning for Season 2. However, her new costume seemed a little too close to the one Sam Wilson wore as Falcon.

The wings are quite similar to what Falcon employed, from their overall aesthetic to the functionality of the design. While Scarlet Scarab uses golden armor rather than a jetpack and the positioning of the wings on the two suits is different, they look very similar visually. They also seem to serve the same purpose. Moon Knight could have switched things up to give Layla mystical or energy-based wings instead. It's understandable that the show wanted to hew closer to Egyptian gods and give Scarlet Scarab a regal feel, but the character deserved her own look.

The way Layla took off, flew and landed was also very similar to when Falcon used his rocket-powered wings. This made her overall combat style feel like a rip-off when she should have been given her own flight style and choreography to suit her character. From her spin attacks on the ground to throwing the wings up as shields against bullets or blades, Scarlet Scarab came off as a Falcon pastiche.

Layla becoming Scarlet Scarab in Moon Knight

Falcon's signature flight and fight had already been seen in the Captain America and Avengers movies, so rinsing and repeating diminished Layla's impact when she had been a progressive character. She deserved better, especially since the Scarlet Scarab costume didn't have to resemble a medieval bird. The look may be cool, but it's not as unique as the various costumes Moon Knight gave Steven and Marc over the series.

The Khonshu suits are unlike anything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with even the business look of Steven's Mr. Knight being unique. Layla should have incorporated more of Taweret; had she been influenced more by the goddess, her look would have changed, plus she could have had other abilities tied to the power of the hippo. That would have carved out an identity with a lot more personality, rather than making Layla look like another iteration of Falcon.
