WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Moon Knight Episode 2, "Summon the Suit," now streaming on Disney+.

Moon Knight Episode 2, "Summon the Suit," is pretty heavy on the exposition, but it gives a lot of context to what's been going on when Steven isn't in control of his body. Besides finding out that his other personality Marc Spector has a wife, there's also the revelation that the Egyptian god Khonshu wants said wife to be his next avatar.

The first episode introduces Layla as some sort of ally to Marc when Steven finds her name in a phone hidden in his apartment. In "Summon the Suit," she tracks him down and explains to him that he can't just up and leave, since she's still his wife. However, the two are on the brink of divorce, to which hopeless romantic Steven blurts out he would never divorce Layla. Layla also knows about Moon Knight, and says that the two fought together to retrieve the scarab that sinister cult leader Arthur Harrow is after. The one thing she doesn't seem to know about is Marc's Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID).

Layla's reaction to meeting Steven is just about how most people would react if their partner abandoned them. Layla is turned off by Steven's accent and assumes he's living with another woman in his apartment. She accuses of him "creating" Steven as a fake identity to sleep around, which no one can blame her for considering the duffel bag of cash and weapons that Steven found earlier, along with his job as a mercenary. While Layla tries to put the pieces together, Marc pleads with Steven to make her leave, implying that Arthur will kill her if she knew that Steven had the scarab.

Marc's distress about Layla's return seems irrational until the end of the episode. Layla's pretty capable of handling herself, especially since she's fought alongside Moon Knight, so why won't Marc just let her help Steven? Turns out his worries stem from the fact that Khonshu plans for Layla to be his next Moon Knight. Marc is ready to get out of the game of vigilantism, but that leaves an open spot for Khonshu to find another avatar. Layla is a close confidant and a proficient fighter, so she makes for a good candidate... hence why Marc left Layla behind, to create some distance between her, Moon Knight and Khonshu.

Marc is left to decide whether the price of leaving Khonshu is too high to pay. He promises a miserable Steven that once he repays Khonshu his debt that he'll be out of Steven's life forever, and will give up his work as Moon Knight. But he doesn't want this life for his wife, who will be forced to take up the mantle once he's finished. His conflict makes Arthur's point about Khonshu always needing "one more thing" pretty logical, especially learning that Arthur was Khonshu's avatar before Marc. Khonshu might not even truly want Layla to be the next Moon Knight; he could just be using her as an excuse to keep Marc in the white suit.

What's more heartbreaking is that Steven unknowingly manifested many of Layla's passions into his personality. Steven and Layla both discover their shared love for French poetry -- specifically, the same poet -- and hieroglyphics, which is apparently something Marc has never expressed fondness over. Marc has been finding ways to remember Layla through Steven, which may further prove that Marc would be willing to continue as Moon Knight if it means Layla remains free.
