The following contains spoilers from Moon Knight #19, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

The vigilante Moon Knight, aka Marc Spector, is unique in multiple ways. The nature of his backstory, his cosmic connection, and his dissociative identity disorder make him stand out even among the most odd and occult heroes of the Marvel Universe. Despite these distinctions, Moon Knight's most interesting aspect is his fighting style.

Moon Knight's combat skills are as chaotic as his day-to-day life. His background demonstrates the all encompassing nature of his knowledge and experience. For example, his brief stint as a marine and later career as a boxer perfected his weapon and martial arts skills. Moon Knight also has incredible acrobatic prowess and a keen mind for batttlefield strategy. His multifaceted skills make him a dangerous combatant. However, it is the way he applies those skills that make him a truly terrifying vigilante.

Moon Knight's Regular Way of Fighting

Moon Knight not only deals massive amounts of damage but also has an elevated pain tolerance. He will often let himself be beaten and bruised as much needed in order take down his enemy. Not only this, there are multiple instances where Moon Knight has pushed himself to an extreme level. This mentality is reflected in every facet of his persona, from his mostly close ranged weapon arsenal to the fact that he wears white so his enemies can see him. His combat is so unpredictable that even Taskmaster refuses to copy his tactics. The normally fearless villain even seems like he never wants to fight the Fist of Khonshu again.

This brutalist strategy has made Moon Knight the victor in many of his fight. Usually the damage is minimal in comparison to his opponent, there are times when he's beaten almost to the point of death. While this would be cause for concern with many other heroes, Moon Knight has always had a cosmic safety net in the god Khonshu. Marc Spector has been resurrected three times by his patron, and it's always been implied that Marc would always be able to come back to life.

Why Moon Knight Has to Change His Way of Fighting

moon knight 19 that's the point

However, in Moon Knight #19 (by Jed Mackay, Federico Sabbatini, Rachelle Rosenberg, and VC's Cory Petit), Hunter's Moon, reveals that Khonshu no longer has the ability to resurrect his avatars. Right now, Moon Knight doesn't seem convinced this is true, but if it is, it means that Marc no longer has regenerative abilities. There has not been an immediate fallout to this loss, especially given Moon Knight's habits for self-sabotage. But the situation may change because Moon Knight has demonstrated he would go to extremes for his friends and allies. In addition, he has a sense of guilt connected to the people he cares for.

The most recent sense of responsibility comes from his friend Soldier. Moon Knight's latest ally was turned into a vampire in order to survive a deadly attack from Zodiac. Considering that Zodiac is still out there, as seen in Moon Knight #19, there is no doubt that he will be back to finish off Moon Knight's friends. It's not hard to imagine Moon Knight, in an act of desperation to save the people he loves, takes on too much and makes the ultimate sacrifice without a built in safety net. This newest revelation may be completely truthful or another one of Khonshu's manipulations. Even so, Moon Knight will certainly display more caution in combat.
