Following Moon Knight's hit Disney+ show, it's certainly fair to say that there's been some renewed interest in the character's comic book history. Hopefully this means more people will go back and read Jeff Lemire and Greg Smallwood’s Moon Knight, which ran from 2016 to 2017, and gave the titular hero an incredible ending.

Lemire and Smallwood’s 14 issue series reveled in the psychological aspects of the Moon Knight mythos, setting the entire story within Marc Spector’s mind. There was a certain level of finality to this, as the hero embarked on a journey of self-discovery, and finally broke away from a vicious cycle of pain and suffering brought on by Khonshu.

Moon Knight's Final Showdown with Khonshu

Marc Spector confronts Khonshu in Moon Knight #14

By having Khonshu as the overarching antagonist, the series felt like a dramatic culmination to Moon Knight’s story. Traditionally, the Egyptian god has been Marc Spector’s spiritual mentor, but Lemire and Smallwood brought to life the breaking point of their relationship. Khonshu was portrayed as the living embodiment of doubt, constantly destroying the hero's self-esteem in their scenes together. This kind of psychologically manipulative villain can be interpreted in many ways, including a metaphor for a toxic relationship or even mental illness.

It was therefore very rewarding to follow Marc’s character arc throughout the series, as he gradually regained control over his life, and in a very empowering moment, chose to reject Khonshu’s negativity. During this climatic moment, Marc finally embraced his various personalities, solidifying self-acceptance as a central theme of his personal growth. In spite of Khonshu’s constant belittling, Marc discovered his own worth, and finally decided to become the most authentic version of himself possible. The series ended with a lovely sequence of Moon Knight simply living in the moment relishing his inner peace, and it’s the perfect final scene for a character who has continually suppressed his true sense of self.

The Completion of Moon Knight's Personal Journey

Moon Knight talks about his recent voyage of self-discovery

Lemire and Smallwood’s run notably brought Moon Knight’s story full circle by providing a modern retelling of his origin. The final arc jumped between flashbacks that showed Khonshu controlling Marc’s life at every turn and the hero's present as he prepared for his final confrontation with the lunar god. This was an effective structure that demonstrated just how far Marc had come. At long last, he could finally move on from a troubled past haunted by Khonshu and finally be free.

Ultimately, Moon Knight received the perfect ending in this story, which plunged far into the depths of his psyche. By overcoming his past demons and embarking on the path to true happiness, Marc received a natural conclusion to his story, making this triumphant finale ripe for adaptation in the MCU.
