The following contains major spoilers for Moon Knight: Black, White & Blood #4, available now from Marvel Comics.

For as long as he has been a part of the Marvel Universe, Marc Spector has safely counted himself among the ranks of its most tortured and terrifying heroes. Of course, he hasn't earned that reputation merely by taking on the mantle of Moon Knight, although doing so certainly hasn't helped. In fact, the unseen service to his patron god appears to have done the most damage to Marc's overall outlook, especially when Khonshu has been making him fight his own Secret Wars for years.

"Good Morning" (by Christopher Cantwell, Alex Lins, and VC's Cory Petit) finds Marc Spector wading through a field of Xs etched into the cold ground, all in the service of a game of sorts. As he explains it, the Xs are the spaces he can move through one at a time, each of them ready to confront him with some horror from his past. Though these specters and figments are certainly all legitimate threats, they aren't the ones who Moon Knight is meant to be fighting. Rather, each battle he faces is one against himself just as much as it is against his enemies, especially when those enemies take the form of his closest allies.

While all of this might seem like some wild fever dream or the machinations of a villain such as Mojo or Arcade, the truth is far worse than that. In actuality, these circumstances are nothing more than a nightly chore for Marc to deal with. This is the world he faces every time he goes to sleep, and all because Khonshu deems it to be so. In spite of Marc already fighting countless battles in Khonshu's name during his waking hours, it appears the God of Vengeance requires him to continue doing so even while at rest.

Not only does Khonshu test Marc's mettle by setting him up to kill his own former loved ones such as Randall Spector, aka Shadowknight, but the deity also makes sure that no turn is ever as safe as it seems. The gauntlet of bloodshed which Khonshu subjects Marc to is objectively cruel, not to mention selfish. Yet it ultimately reinforces Moon Knight's strength apart from that bestowed by his patron god just as much as it does any other.

Khonshu's long-lived influence over Marc has often exacerbated the hero's preexisting mental health issues, not the least of which is his Dissociative Identity Disorder. Though Marc has gone to great lengths to come to terms with his various personalities and the parts of Moon Knight they comprise, Khonshu has rarely if ever done anything to help in that regard. If anything, Khonshu has taken advantage of Marc's deeper issues, and his nightly slaughters are just another example of that.

In ensuring that his champion will continue spilling blood in his name tirelessly, Khonshu is exerting a twisted sort of control over Marc. It is a way to keep the Moon Knight under his thumb, as well as a means by which to reinforce the nature of their relationship while simultaneously forcing Marc's worship. Thankfully, Marc has found the strength to forge a path of his own in more recent years, even if the shadow of Khonshu hasn't yet or will never be lifted entirely.
