WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Moon Knight, Episode 2, "Summon the Suit" streaming now on Disney+.

The first two episodes of Moon Knight offer plenty of Easter eggs for eager fans to search for, and a few in particular hint to Khonshu’s major ties to the Wakandian Panther Goddess, Bast. There are many statues and hieroglyphs within the first two episodes that depict this great cat goddess who led the Wakandians to the source of the Black Panther’s power, the heart-shaped herb. For example, during Episode 2, one of the paintings in the museum's HR office depicts Sekhmet, which is an alterego of Bast.

Marvel Cinematic Universe and classic comic fans are pretty familiar with Bast and her connection to the Black Panther storyline at this point, but may not be as familiar with her connections to Khonshu. Bast is actually an Egyptian deity and is within the Ennead pantheon alongside Khonshu, Thoth and Horus. In fact, Bast and Khonshu are half-siblings within the Marvel Comics lore and aren’t exactly gods, but cosmic beings that hail from a pocket dimension adjacent to Earth known as Celestial Heliopolis.

This is yet to be established with the MCU canon, but establishing cosmic origins for the Egyptian gods would be inline with how the MCU canonized the cosmic origins of the Norse gods within the films. In the comics, Bast migrates away from Egypt and becomes connected to the African Pantheon called the Orisha. Bast goes on to create her own separate dimension between the Celestial Heliopolis and the Orisha dimension of Ala known as the Spirit World. This realm of the Panther Goddess is where the spirits of the Black Panther avatars live on and pass down their knowledge to their successor through visions, which is established in the Black Panther film as the Djalia.

The concepts of gods and avatars are heavily focused on within the first two episodes of Moon Knight, so it makes sense that Bast is making some subtle appearances given the god’s pantheon connections and use of human avatars. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the series continue to build upon this connection and further explore the cosmic interweaving of the Marvel universe. It would also make sense to establish these cosmic connections within the MCU given that Gorr the God Butcher will be the featured villain of the next Thor film, and his storyline is specifically about attempting to murder all the gods across reality.

There is plenty of potential for more Bast and Wakanda references as the Moon Knight series continues to move forward given such an extensive history with Khonshu and the other gods of the Marvel Universe. It would make sense if Bast has a brief cameo during the season or a post-credits scene possibly warning Khonshu of the coming danger of Gorr. Alternatively, it would also be a great opportunity to set up Atum and the Sun King as the villain for Season 2 of Moon Knight. Both Bast and Khonshu are children of Atum, so Bast could appear in order to warn of their father's return and the threat of the Sun King.

Whatever route is pursued, it is amazing to see how subtle and detail-orientated Moon Knight is being with its references and Easter eggs. The showrunners are doing a stellar job of alluding to Moon Knight's extensive history and connection to other Marvel heroes such as Black Panther. The first couple episodes have already hosted a number of Black Panther references, so it won't be surprising to see more connections to the nation of Wakanda before the end of the first season.

To see the references to Bast, watch Moon Knight, currently streaming on Disney+, with new episodes premiering on Wednesdays.
