All this month I'll be reviewing different comic books by female creators, based on submissions from the actual creators of the comic books themselves. Here's a list of all the books featured so far this month.

We continue with Lucky Lupin by writer/artist Juliana Xavier ...

Lucky Lupin is a new webcomic, just at the start of its second chapter, but so far just in the first chapter, Xavier has created an interesting world and two compelling main characters.

The series opens with one of the more awesome (but sad) death sequences I've seen recently. In fact, it's an awesome "hook" sequence period. I think I'll just post it entirely...

Come on, besides being one of the saddest parental deaths in a forest this side of Bambi, that's one heck of a hook to open your book on, right? "Run." So cool.

Okay, so from what I can gather from this first issue so far, Lucky is a sort of lupine creature and she is on the run but she gets captured on the property of a former celebrity named Kim who is now living alone in the wilderness. Seemingly unrelated to Lucky showing up, though, some bad guys show up on Kim's property looking for something she claims that she does not have.

Chaos (and explosions) ensue.

Xavier is off to a fine start with this comic. Kim is a real hoot (we first meet her getting her gun after hearing a noise and informing Jesus that she might be sending him some company in Heaven soon), the bad guys are suitably creepy and Lucky's situation is a nice mix between mysterious and yet obvious (what I mean is, it is obvious that she's on the run and in danger - that much is clear, but WHY is the mystery).

Should be a lot of fun getting to the bottom of all this stuff.
