All this month I’ll be reviewing different comic books with LGBT themes (LGBT standing for “Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgender”), based on submissions from the actual creators of the comic books themselves. Here is an archive of the comics featured so far!
Today we take a look at Charles “Zan” Christensen and Mark Brill’s sexually charged tale of vengeance, with the first two issues of the Witchblade-esque The Mark of Aeacus.
NOTE: There is some sexual content in the preview pages.
This is the first comic from Class Comics to not be erotica, in the traditional sense, but it still opens with some hot and heavy anonymous sex…
You see, our hero is pretty down in the dumps – his life is not going the way he wanted it to go, and he is basically looking to be punished. Instead, the anonymous guy he hooks up with transfers something to him…
He wakes up with tattoos on his body, and when he is accosted by some hoodlums, the tattoos show that they are part of something much greater than just ink…
Before he takes out a bad guy, he gives them a mark on their forehead…
In the next issue, a mysterious being comes to visit him and explain to him how this is a power given to mortals by a forgotten demigod.
This other being wants to bring an end to the Mark of the Aeacus, and tries to stop our hero, who has bought into this Witchblade/Ghost Rider-esque situation with (to pardon the phrase) a vengeance.
Brill’s artwork is quite good – he does good character work and he tells the story well. Plus, the visuals of the transformed being is very cool. Reminds me of Image Comics’ Haunt (this pre-dates Haunt). Christensen delivers an interesting twist on a very familiar concept (the whole Ghost Rider angle of it all). Things are still a bit in the early stages of the story, but what we’ve gotten so far has been done well.
