Every day this month I’ll be reviewing a different independent comic book, based on submissions from the creators of the comic books themselves.
The month continues with the second volume of Jason Turner and Manien Botma’s series, True Loves, where we explore just how difficult “living happily ever after” can be sometimes!
I reviewed the first volume of True Loves here. It ended with the main character, True (a Vancouver clothing store owner) and her boyfriend, Zander (a grocery store worker) professing their love for each other and then a single page saying, “And they lived happily ever after.”
In True Loves Volume 2, we see the trials and tribulations that go into “living happily ever after.”
At the beginning of the series, True moves in with Zander, but as time goes by, she not only reconnects with her ex-boyfriend, Dirk, but strikes up a close friendship with a guy (without telling him she has a boyfriend).
Here is how the comics originally appeared on-line before being collected into the book…
And here is what they look like in the book itself…
Turner and Botma have a good handle on how people think and act. One thing I really liked is that, in this volume at least, Zander and True’s slight indiscretions never actually come to light. That was an interesting approach (and realistic, I think).
Turner has a charming style, art-wise. His characters are all likable, even when they do things that aren’t so likable.
Here’s a particularly charming sequence…
This is a fun romantic story. I am looking forward to volume 3!!
