Every day this month I’ll be reviewing a different independent comic book, based on submissions from the creators of the comic books themselves.
The month continues with a charming mini-comic by Cathy Leamy about the friendship between a young fisherman and a mer-man.
This mini-comic is a very slight story, but heck, that’s why they call ’em mini-comics, I guess, right? Especially when you can purchase the comic from Leamy’s website here for just $3.50, shipping included!
In any event, the story revolves around a young fisherman named Reggie, who is irked that all the other fishermen have cool nicknames like “Buckets,” “Big Tim,” “Sweepy,” etc. He wants a nickname, too, so he pesters his boss for one until he gets one…but not the one he ever would have wanted…
Luckily, Reggie is pals with a mer-man, Brian, who helps him out by getting to the bottom of just why his boat is always the most covered with barnacles…
The reason is quite cute and so is the way Brian and Reggie conspire to solve Reggie’s nickname problem.
Of course, naturally, as you know by now, things don’t always go according to plan.
As I mentioned in the introduction, this is a charming story by Leamy, who I’ve featured on the site in the past. Her work is often charming, so it is not like this is some major exception, although she definitely does tell this story in a slightly different style than her other comics – it honestly reads like a children’s book, in both the subject matter (this is definitely All Ages material) and the way that each page has two big panels on them (plus some splash pages with just one panel) – it makes the story read a lot faster, but, again, that’s how children’s books work, and I presume that was intentional on Leamy’s part.
Anyhow, this was a well-told story with good artwork.
Be sure to check out Leamy’s website for her other works.
NOTE: Sorry for the delay. Naturally, I wanted to link to Leamy’s site, and there was a short outage for her site, so I held off posting this until it was back up.
