Month of Avengers/X-Men Top Fives - Top Five Mutant Avengers

All month-long we'll be featuring top five lists about either the Avengers or the X-Men. Here is an archive of all the past top five lists!

In this installment, we'll look at the top five mutant members of the Avengers.

The brand-new members are too brand-new to make the list (Havok, Rogue, Cannonball and Sunspot). Storm really barely had a cup of coffee with the team, so the amount of legitimate options for this list are surprisingly small. While I like Namor, I wasn't a huge fan of his tenure on the team (Roger Stern never really seemed to have full access to the character and by the time you would think he'd be able to really spotlight the character, Stern was taken off of the title and Walter Simonson's job was to break the team apart so Namor didn't have much of a great tenure). There WAS one really good issue where Cap stood up for Namor against protesters.

5. Justice

While I enjoy Firestar a lot, Justice has to be the pick between the two. Remember when he answered Captain America's call back in the first arc of Busiek/Perez's Avengers? That sense of honor and love of being an Avenger was such a fascinating idea. I love the concept of a guy who always wanted to be in the big leagues and now that he is there, can he cut it? Firestar is great, too, but she seemed to be more along for the ride than anything else.

4. Wolverine

One of the best aspects of Jason Aaron's work with Wolverine is the way that he's made it clear that Wolverine really is all things to all people, which is why he manages to work well on the Avengers. While he might have been brought on to the team to be the guy who would do the dirty work when the time came, he has slowly progressed into being an important and prominent member of the team, working on both the New Avengers AND the main Avengers team for quite awhile before taking on his current role on the expanded main Avengers team.

3. Quicksilver

We know you're better than a one star character, Quicksilver! However, you're also not in the same ballpark as the next two characters.

2. Beast

I love how Beast epitomizes things people claim to dislike (X-Men joining the Avengers and writers adding their pet characters on to the team book when they take over writing it) but since Beast joined the Avengers before most of them were fans, Beast is somehow an exception and not the exception that proves the rule (which is to say that he is the exception that proves the rule is full of shit).

However, he hasn't had the same impact as...

1. Scarlet Witch

One of the all-time Avengers greats. I'm glad Uncanny Avengers is exploring her mutantdom some more, it is a fascinating aspect of her history, as she (pre-Disassembled) might have been the most popular mutant on Earth as a longtime celebrated member of the Avengers.

That's the list! Agree? Disagree? Let me know!
