Month of Art Stars: Artist’s Choice – Fiona Staples

Every day this month I’m going to feature the work of a great artist, only instead of me picking the artist to feature, they will be picked by their peers, fellow professional comic book artists who are picking out artists (from the past and present) who they think deserve special attention. Do note that most artists I asked about this gave me multiple answers and I picked out one choice out of a number of suggestions, so these are not definitive answers, like “Artist X likes Artist Y and he thinks all other Artists are terrible!” Here is an archive of the artists featured so far!

Today, we have the pick of Frazer Irving, a really great artist who I was just praising a lot the other day for his work on Seven Soldiers: Klarion. He’s going to be doing an arc on Batman and Robin, and it’ll surely look awesome. Here‘s his website.

Frazer’s pick is Fiona Staples.

Fiona Staples is a relative newcomer to the world of comics. Her first comic book series was finished while she was just ending art school a few years back.

Her big break was getting a gig at Wildstorm, drawing an Authority tie-in mini-series.

Here are some pages from that book…

As you can see, like the man who picked her, Staples has a quirky style that gives her work a unique feel while never scrimping on the storytelling. Artists like that always amaze the heck out of me with their ability to tell the story clearly while being extremely stylistic, as well.

Currently, she’s doing a mini-series for Wildstorm called North 40, due out in July.

Here are the covers for issues #1 and 2 and two pages from #1…

She’s also doing some work for Marvel, including this “Wolverine Art Appreciation” cover…

Here’s three pages from a short story she drew…

As you can see, she has a particular knack for drawing teens.

Here are a cover and some interior art she did for a magazine discussing teen literature…

Here are some various sketches by Staples…

A redesign of Zatanna…

A slight redesign of Freefall…

And just a flat out neat sketch of Hawkman…

I’m sure we will be seeing a LOT more of Staples in the future!

Be sure to check out her website here! She posts a lot of fun sketches there!

Thanks to Frazer for the pick!!
