Just like Resident EvilMonster Hunter is also based on a video game. In this case, players battle giant monsters and create new armor and weapons out of their body parts. Monster Hunter originally came out in 2004 on the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Wii. In 2018, Monster Hunter: World arrived on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The movie transports Jovovich's Lt. Artemis into a world "beneath our world," where she and her soldiers go to battle with the enormous monsters. This is a change from the game, as hunters tracking down monsters are replaced by soldiers fighting for their lives in the movie.

Director Paul W.S. Anderson has compared the film to Resident Evil, in that he could come in and create his own characters and story arc in the world of Monster Hunter. Even so, most of the monsters will come from the games and the movie will include imagery used in both Monster Hunter World and earlier games in the series.

Monster Hunter is the director's first movie since Resident Evil: The Final Chapter in 2016. He referred to Monster Hunter as a nine-year passion project.

Directed by Anderson, Monster Hunter stars Milla Jovovich, Ron Perlman, TI, Tony Jaa and Diego Boneta. The movie arrives in theaters on Sept. 4, 2020.
