The Monogatari series is an interesting beast in more ways than one. There are plenty of ways to portray high school life, young dilemmas, and the transitional period known as adolescence but using Japanese spirits and curses is a pretty interesting way to go about it. The people of Koyomi Araragi's town and even the entire world are in constant conflict with their own problems and societal contradictions, making them easy prey for this world's oddities and oddity specialists to abuse.

Oddities are supernatural beings that are the manifestation of humanity itself, meaning that they can either simply cure another human or humans themselves transform into them. Monogatari has plenty of spooky ones at their disposal, and this list will be seeing who exactly is the strongest.

10 Snake-Cutting Rope

Jagirinawa, aka "snake-cutting rope," is an interesting middle ground where Monogatari's supernatural elements meet its uniquely suggestive nature. One of the series' heroines, Nadeko Sengoku, was suddenly cursed by two separate classmates and found herself constricted by some deathly snakes that left scaly, rope-like impressions across her body.

Though it could seem kinky in its visual, these two snakes were torturing this young girl and could have very well killed her. Fortunately enough, with Araragi's advice and his two fists, Nadeko was able to get rid of these pesky snakes and even send one of them back to whoever sent it.

9 Flame-Wreathe Bee

Karen Araragi is an optimistic, strong willed girl who'd use her martial arts skills to help defend her junior high alongside her younger sister as one-half of the famous Fire Sisters. However, that same sense of justice would unfortunately come back to bite her or, in this instance, sting. After Karen caught Deishuu Kaiki selling fake charms to her classmates, she tried standing up to him, only for the nefarious specialist to put a fake oddity, the Flame-wreathe Bee, on her.

This is a strange oddity that causes the victim to become grossly ill and paralyzed. However, the bee itself is a fake oddity. It was born from a lie that now stalks the modern day. But, as a lie, it doesn't really require any intervention from oddity specialists and can seemingly just go away. While a simple curse, it still had terrifying effects on the Araragi family and speaks leagues to the power and danger of people's lies.

8 Heavy Stone Crab

The Heavy Stone Crab has a special place in every Monogatari fan's heart as the first oddity that fans get to see Araragi clash with and the one that introduces the series' main heroine, Hitagi Senjougahara.  Senjougahara has a lot going on in her past given that her mom joined a cult to help her with a previous illness.

Such an ordeal has left Senjougahara with trauma that she can only wish that she didn't have. Ignoring these issues, Senjougahara inadvertently meets the Heavy Stone Crab that, alongside the weight of her memories, removes her weight as a person, eventually causing her to be as light as paper. The crab itself was also strong and surprisingly wrathful when Araragi tried to stop it.

7 Lost Cow

After her parents became divorced, Mayoi Hachikuji was forced to go a long time without seeing her mother. Desperate, she ventures out on her own to look for her, only to get hit by a truck along the way. In a constant search for a home that she couldn't find and, as the series would reveal, doesn't even exist anymore, Hachikuji becomes the oddity, the Lost Cow.

When she meets unsuspecting traveler, she can inadvertently force them to be endlessly lost. While one could end this by going on another path, it's still one of the most powerful and encompassing oddities out there.

6 Rainy Devil

Long ago, Tooe Gaen, one of the series' premiere oddity specialists, helped create a powerful oddity of her own, the Rainy Devil. After she also had to help defeat it, Gaen took responsibility of looking after its arm. Her daughter, Suruga Kanbaru, would mistakenly think that the Rainy Devil arm was actually a monkey's paw and tried to use it to become good at track.

Instead, it cursed Kanbaru and had her rampage and attack Araragi when she found out that he was going out with Senjougahara. The  curse could have only been lifted when it found out, thoroughly, that Araragi couldn't actually be killed. Though it tried quite a bit, the curse couldn't avenge Kanbaru and ended its rampage though it continued to curse her body.

5 Hindering Cat

Tsubasa Hanekawa initially appeared as one of the most innocent characters in the series only for that perception to be turned on its head when fans learned of her mysterious other side. Hanekawa has always been a quiet, reserved child and this often came to her own emotional detriment especially after her family's constant, hostile transitions.

This would have the sawarineko, the hindering cat, to take interest in her and possess her. This had Hanekawa on occasion turn into "Black Hanekawa" and unleash her incredible amounts of strength on unsuspecting people while also absorbing said victim's energy for the sawarineko.

4 Yotsugi Oninoki

Yotsugi Oninoki has a special place on this list as a character with a lot of spiritual power behind them. She is the tsukomogami of a long dead girl who was resurrected as an experiment by a group of occult specialists. She would soon become the familiar to one of them and, thus, was both a tsukomogami and a shikigami familiar.

This strange body would allow Oninoki plenty of superhuman strength that could clash with (but inevitably fail to) Shinobu. She also has a strange ability called "Unlimited Rule Book," which lets her explode things and launch herself at high speeds.

3 Kako

Hanekawa is a troubled character to outclass this series' long line of troubled people. This is best evident by the oddities she has summoned. And while "Black Hanekawa" was an issue enough, she would also later bring in another feline menace. Still haunted by her past, Hanekawa accidently gives birth to Kako, a burning tiger spirit that goes to Hanekawa's old homes and burns them out of her envy.

Kako himself was a powerful beast that, between his enormous strength and fire, was never formally beat in the series but was instead reabsorbed into Hanekawa when she learned to accept her feelings once again.

2 Vampires

Vampires are one of if not the most terrifying race of oddities within the Monogatari world. They're immensely strong, immensely fast monsters that ruled within their respective domains. They, of course, can suck blood and turn other people into vampires, though Monogatari's version includes an interesting energy drain and even an incredible regenerative power for even half-vampires that can more than rival Deadpool.

The best example of this in the series would have to be everone's favorite donut-eating shadow, Shinobu. She was a legend during her centuries journey and is even now a major power within the show despite being trapped in a little girl's body.

1 Kuchinawa

Monogatari's Nadeko Sengoku looking over her shoulder and smiling

Nadeko Sengoku is infamously one of the least liked girls in the series and maybe that's for a good reason. She doesn't offer as much conversation as the other girls, her problems never appeared as severe, and, of course, she became a malevolent god that tried to kill Araragi out of jealousy. After Nadeko tried to get rid of the jagirinawa curse by herself, she found herself under the wrath of a snake god that turned her into an oddity.

As the story would go on, Nadeko would develop more power and learn that it manifested from her jealousy of Senjougahara dating Araragi. She'd soon become powerful enough to actually become a deity and tried to pass judgement on the couple. Though it would take some persuasion from Kaiki to give up that power, Nadeko was never actually defeated in the series and is perhaps the only character to actually reach god status.
