The following contains spoilers for Monica Rambeau: Photon #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

One Marvel scientist has predicted that Monica Rambeau will destroy the universe.

Written by Eve L. Ewing with art by Luca Maresca and Ivan Fiorelli, Monica Rambeau: Photon is a new miniseries starring the former Captain Marvel. In the title's debut issue, Monica visits Doctor Strange and Wong at the Sanctum Sanctorum, just before a masked giant with polymorph abilities appears outside the building. After Monica, Spider-Man/Peter Parker and Wong successfully apprehend the towering figure, she is unmasked as Dr. Yesenia Rosario and tries to attack Monica while screaming out, "Monica Rambeau is going to destroy the universe!"

Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel's Freaky Friday, Explained

Yesenia is a character created by Ewing and artist Joey Vazquez back in 2019, first appearing in Marvel Team-Up #1. Until Monica Rambeau: Photon #1, she had only appeared in Marvel Team-Up #1 through #3, a story in which Peter and Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan swapped bodies while preventing the Jackal from stealing Yesenia's technology. By the end of Marvel Team-Up #3, Yesenia successfully switches the two back, but the procedure appeared to give Yesenia Kamala's powers.

The reason why Yesenia believes that Monica will destroy the universe is not given in Monica Rambeau: Photon #1, but Peter sums up Yesenia's behavior as another "incredible scientific mind" just snapping. The miniseries is set to last five issues total and will test the heights that Monica's powers can go. The title also arrives ahead of Monica's next appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Monica Rambeau Is One of the MCU’s New Superheroes

In 2023, actor Teyonah Parris will reprise her role as Monica Rambeau for The Marvels, a sequel to Captain Marvel (2019) starring Brie Larson. Parris previously portrayed an adult Monica in Disney+'s WandaVision series, but she will return alongside Larson's Carol Danvers and Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan in the upcoming film. The movie marks the second MCU project for Vellani as well. Her character was introduced in her own Marvel Disney+ series, Ms. Marvel.

What superhero identity Monica will sport in the MCU remains to be seen, however. Her new comic miniseries restores her moniker as "Photon," but she has gone by both "Captain Marvel" and "Spectrum" in the past. She has held the name Spectrum throughout more recent comics, such Marvel's Thunderbolts miniseries in which she is a main player.

Along with Ewing, Maresca and Fiorelli, Monica Rambeau: Photon #1 is colored by Carlos Lopez and lettered by VC's Clayton Cowles. Main cover art is by Lucas Werneck, with variant cover artwork contributed to by Brian Stelfreeze, Karen S. Darboe, Chris Peter, Mateus Manhanini, Norm Breyfogle, Dean White and Peach Momoko. The issue is now on sale from Marvel Comics.
