The director of The Marvels knows about Monica Rambeau's more obscure superpowers, but don't expect to see them all in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie.

Nia DeCosta, who is directing the movie starring Teyonah Parris as Monica alongside Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan and Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, shared her excitement about building on the MCU's version of Monica in an interview at D23 interview. While the other two leads' superpowers have been firmly established on screen, Monica's abilities haven't yet been pinned down, leaving The Marvels writers with some room to get creative. "It's so fun to come up with that stuff," said DeCosta. "I love that stuff, I'm really a big nerd for like that, power set shit."

DeCosta went on to specify what went into determining Monica's power set. "With Monica we really got to talk about, which of her thousands of powers in the comics do we want to make canon in the MCU? You know, there's a part in the comics where she realizes she's immortal, and she freaks out, and then she goes intangible in water and her atoms scatter across the ocean, and that takes her like forever to put herself back together."

"She's insane!" DeCosta said in summary. "So it's like, you have so much to choose from." However, she made it clear that the example she chose from Monica's history was just that, an example: "Anyway, we didn't do that."

Who Are the Marvels?

The Marvels will see the team of Monica, Kamala and Carol forming the film's eponymous superhero team. They will be joined by MCU veteran Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, as well as Zawe Ashton in an as-yet unrevealed role which is potentially the film's main antagonist. Production began in 2020, one year after the first Captain Marvel film starring Larson, but has been subject to multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ultimately, the release date was pushed back to almost one year past its originally planned premiere on July 8, 2022. Vellani announced on May 12 that The Marvels had officially finished filming.

Although the film as meant as a sequel to Captain Marvel, DeCosta previously spoke about balancing Vellani and Parris' roles to give both a chance to shine. "Captain Marvel has a history from the first film, Kamala will have her Ms. Marvel show, and Monica Rambeau, we've only seen her a little bit in WandaVision," DeCosta noted. "How do we honor the part of the story they're at in terms of the canon, while also within our story making them equal?"

The Marvels is set to smash into theaters on July 28, 2023.
