Whether it be shonen, mecha, or even isekai, every genre has at least one lousy iteration within the pool of multiple adaptions—and shojo is no different. From classics like Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura to more recent hits in the past years like Blue Spring Ride and Snow White with the Red Hair, the shojo genre is full of excellent series.

However, that doesn't mean some of the more modern ones have their flaws. From sending the wrong messages to just being downright awful, here are 10 modern shojo anime that have already aged poorly.

10 Anonymous Noise — The Cliché Of A Girl Chasing After Her Lost Love Has Been Overdone

Fukumenkei Noise All Three Main Characters As Children

Anonymous Noise focuses on the cliché shojo trope of a girl chasing her true love and not giving up on him—despite there being another person who treats her way better. In this case, it follows Nono Arisugawa, a girl with a powerful voice but no clue how to utilize it.

When she meets Kanade Yuzuriha, he's quick to fall in love with her and decides to help her with both improving her vocals and finding her lost love. However, Nino clearly only thinks about Momo Sakaki—her best friend who left when she was small—and still loves him despite him either coldly brushing her off or not giving her the time of day. Despite all of this, Nino's feelings for him never waver—and he even won at the end of the manga, upsetting fans.

9 Dance With Devils — Every Male Lead Is Problematic In Their Own Right

Dance With Devils: Fortuna

Dance with Devils is a unique mixture of shojo, romance, and music—as every main character has a musical number each episode, no matter how serious the situation may be. Despite the premise, the anime's main problem falls upon the male leads, which all have some issues.

After Ritsuka Tachibana discovers she owns a forbidden item called the Grimoire, she meets various vampires and devils who have some major troubles. This becomes even weirder when she discovers her brother, Lindo Tachibana, is in love with her. This doesn't make it any better when she discovers they're actually cousins instead in the final episodes.

8 Meiji Tokyo Renka — The Plot And Animation Are Both Too Slow-Paced And Bland

Meiji Tokyo Renka

Meiji Tokyo Renkai is an adaption of a mobile phone otome game—this already spells trouble for fans who are well-aware of how those usually pan out. All fans desire from the series is to see their favorite characters moving and speaking, but that doesn't make an anime special.

After Mei Ayazuki is transported to another world, she realizes she's in the Meiji period. She also has the mysterious ability to see spirits coupled with amnesia, making for a complex plot that is both slow-paced and bland.

7 7 Seeds — Apocalyptic Worlds And Shojo Don't Mix In This Attempt At A Netflix Series

7 Seeds Season 2

Most of the time, apocalyptic anime do not do well. This is because the plot is either too slow-paced, fast-paced, or simply too complex for the anime to execute. In 7 Seeds' case, the plot is about how seven boys and girls must survive from tigers, giant insects, and dinosaurs.

On paper, the plot probably sounded great. However, when the anime was actually executed, it turned into a mangled mess that didn't hold together quite as much as fans' had hoped. Nonetheless, the show received a second season that was much more well-received.

6 Midnight Occult Civil Servants — The Anime Doesn't Give Much To Offer In Terms Of Plot, Substance, Or Animation

Midnight Occult Civil Servants was truly an anime that came out of seemingly nowhere for most fans, as on the surface, it did not seem like a shojo series. The anime is an urban fantasy that focuses on Arata Miyako, a descendant of a God named Abe no Seimei, who has decided to join the Nocturnal Community Relations Division.

Even though the anime had an interesting premise, the main problem plagued it was none other than the almost nonexistent animation. The plot wasn't really there either made for a forgettable anime that debuted in Spring 2019.

5 The Ancient Magus' Bride — The Relationship Chise And Elias Forge Is Out Of Codependency

Chise & Elias

No matter how beautiful and unique The Ancient Magus' Bride was when it first debuted, the problem lies with the first half of the series for some fans. Chise Hatori decided to sell herself at an auction and was bought by Elias Ainsworth to become both his disciple and bride.

To make matters worse, Chise had no thoughts or care for her wellbeing at the beginning of the anime. This makes sense, as her family life was non-existent after her mother took her own life—but the show of how Chise couldn't even function without Elias was hard to watch. Thankfully, Chise learned how to be independent quicker than fans would've thought.

4 Kiss Him, Not Me! — The Blatant Fat-Shaming Hurts Every Male Lead But One

Kiss Him Not Me

Kiss Him, Not Me is a beloved shojo anime about accepting who someone is despite their hobbies and appearance. If only it were executed like that without the plot point of the heroine, Kae Serinuma, losing an immense amount of weight in a week after her favorite anime character died.

After Kae losses weight, she attracts the attention of three boys—Nozomu Nanashima, Hayato Shnomiya, Yusuke Igarashi. Thankfully, two of the other characters—Asuma Mutsumi and Shima Nishina—already liked her before her so-called "transformation" in the anime.

3 Bread And My Momo — The Anime Is Just A Shojo Version Of Usagi Drop (With All The Bad Parts)

Bread And My Momo

Bread and my Momo flew under the radar, so most fans may not know what it is—and that might be for the best. Despite the adorable and heartwarming premise of a 12-year-old boy, Shiro, who lost his mother, and his 34-year-old aunt who takes care of him by ensuring he eats.

To ensure he isn't neglected, she comes home early and works late into the night—but she always ensures that he eats at least some kind of bread-based food. The problem is that Shiro falls in love with Momo although they're related and there's a 22 age gap between them.

2 Diabolik Lovers — The Anime Touts Domestic Abuse And Violence Without Any Repercussions

Diabolik Lovers More,Blood

Diabolik Lovers is always going to have a place in shojo history where fans can collectively agree that both the plot and execution were going to be problematic. The story follows Yui Komori, a young girl raised in a church and given as a sacrifice by her father to a family of six sadistic vampires.

Each episode of the anime shows the abuse she goes through, and the characters receiving no repercussions whatsoever for their actions. To make matters worse, there is a second season with Yui choosing which household she wishes to remain in—although she was kidnapped and remains a hostage no matter where she goes.

1 First Love Monster — A Relationship Between A High Schooler And Elementary Schooler Shouldn't Exist

Hatsukoi Monster Couple Kiss

First Love Monster is great in one regard—and that is the fact that it was made at all. After Kaho Nikaido is saved by Kanade Takahashi, she falls in love with him at first sight.

When she confesses her love and asks him to date her, however, things become weird when he declares that he's actually in elementary school despite looking like a teenager. Even after Kaho hears this, she still decides to become his girlfriend.
