With "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" now in theaters, the opening weekend for the highly anticipated final film in the "Hunger Games" franchise is beginning to take shape. The follow-up to 2014's "Mockingjay Part 1" earned an estimated $16 million during its Thursday night screenings, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

EW points out that "Mockingjay Part 2's" $16 million debut is nothing to sneeze at; all-time opening weekend box office champ "Jurassic World" scored $18 million in Thursday night screenings. But while "Mockingjay Part 2's" number is definitely impressive, it does fall behind the three other films in the "Hunger Games" franchise. Last year's "Mockingjay Part 1" edged out that number with $17 million, and 2013's "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" opened with a Thursday night haul of $25.2 million.

Directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Julianne Moore and others, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" is in theaters now.
