The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are discovering the true extent of their oldest enemy's newfound power.

After the latest shocking revelation that Rita Repulsa had returned to the eponymous heroes' world, a preview for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #102 by writer Melissa Flores (Power Rangers, The Dead Lucky) and artist Simona Di Gianfelice (Firefly, Go Go Power Rangers) proves that this isn't the same evil space witch they remember. In her new form as Mistress Vile, Rita shows herself to be strong enough to lethally depose her successor, Lord Zedd, though the heroes aren't exactly willing to give her the chance to do so without a fight.

The preview also gives readers a glimpse not only into the very first, initially awkward encounter the original members of the eponymous team had with one another. As it turns out, Matthew Cook introduced Kimberly to her future teammates Zack and Trini. While the latter three would go on to become Power Rangers together, the discovery of their secret identities by the former -- even after he had single-handedly escaped Rita's clutches -- nearly broke their relationships entirely. Years later, Matthew was chosen by Billy Cranston and Grace Sterling to become Promethea's Green Ranger, a role which he has taken to better than most of his superpowered predecessors.

Rita's return as Mistress Vile comes on the heels of some of the biggest battles the Power Rangers have ever fought. Only shortly after the end of the Eltarian invasion of Earth, the heroes were called away to take on the recently resurrected Death Ranger and their grotesque army of necrotic ghouls. While the heroes managed to overcome both of these encounters, they still haven't properly dealt with the threat posed by more ordinary enemies such as King Aradon's Automaton Dominion, which itself implies the upcoming introduction of King Mondo's Machine Empire to the current comic book continuity.
