The following contains major spoilers for Power Rangers Unlimited: The Death Ranger #1, available now from BOOM! Studios.

The hotly anticipated debut of the Death Ranger also gives fans an introduction to the original and ancient Omega Rangers.

Power Rangers Unlimited: The Death Ranger #1 by writer Paul Allor (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Universe, Hollow Heart) and artists Kath Lobo (Power Rangers, Rogue Sun) and Anna Kekovsky Chandra (Power Rangers Unlimited: Countdown to Ruin) brings readers back to the distant past for the retelling of what appears to be an unexpectedly unsettling children's story. As is quickly made apparent, this fable of the long-lost Gold Omega Ranger is more fact than fiction, as is its description of the rest of the team's original lineup.

The Gold Omega Ranger, better known as the Death Ranger, is revealed as Spa'ark, the last living member of an alien race who had no real understanding of death or finality. This was what would eventually drive them to lash out against the rest of the team following the death of and Spa'ark's subsequent resurrection of the original Blue Omega Ranger, Haza. In turn, Spa'ark was defeated and sealed away by The Puram, Apophee and Bledso, the first Yellow, Black and Red Omegas respectively.

The Death Ranger was first revealed by Allor on social media in May 2022. Although Power Rangers Unlimited: The Death Ranger #1 marks the character's official debut in their own form, the eponymous villain has already made themselves well known in the ongoing Power Rangers series. When Red Space Ranger Andros became determined to resurrect his fallen comrade Zhane, he set out to find the Death Ranger in order to do so. After joining the present-day Omegas, Andros enabled the Death Ranger to take Zhane as their host, leading to a sprawling undead threat the likes of which the heroes have never seen.

The Omega Rangers made their introduction in the pages of 2020's Go Go Power Rangers by writers Ryan Parrott and Sina Grace and artist Francesco Mortarino. At the time, the Omega Rangers had laid dormant for years, though the fallout of Lord Drakkon's war on all realities necessitated their return. The first lineup consisted of original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Jason, Zack, and Trini, all of whom reprised their roles as the Red, Black, and Yellow Rangers. The trio was initially joined by Kiya as the Blue Omega, although she would go on to turn on the rest of the team, forcing them to exile her in much the same way as Spa'ark had been centuries before.

Power Rangers Unlimited: The Death Ranger #1 is written by Paul Allor, with illustrations by Kath Lobo and Anna Kekovsky Chandra, colors by Fabi Marques, Sara Antonellini, and Sharon Marino, and letters by Ed Dukeshire. Main cover art is by Keylo Valerio, with variant cover arts courtesy of Valerio, Goni Montes, Derrick Chew, Bon Bernardo, John Giang, and Dan Mora.
