SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Mister Miracle #10, by Tom King, Mitch Gerads and Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

Ever since the start of Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ Mister Miracle miniseries, Scott Free and Big Barda have been attempting to juggle their everyday lives with their innate responsibilities as New Gods. To complicate matters further, Scott becoming the new Highfather, a war between New Genesis and Apokolips and the birth of a child were also added into the mix over the past nine issues.

Nevertheless, in the previous issue, much to Scott and Barda’s surprise, Darkseid made an offer that was almost too good to be true: He was willing to withdraw all his forces, return all prisoners and surrender the anti-life equation. The problem? In exchange for Apokolips’ surrender, Darkseid’s only demand was that Scott and Barda give him custody of their infant son Jacob.

In Mister Miracle #10, Scott is forced to mull over this impossibly difficult ultimatum while he and Barda plan Jacob’s first birthday party. It’s the absolute last thing Barda wants to discuss, and understandably so. Still, it’s a conversation that can only be avoided for so long because, in the meantime, the casualties are continuing to pile up. In fact, given Barda’s opposition, Scott’s willing to discuss the situation with just about anyone willing to listen, from Booster Gold and Ted Kord to a random cashier at a party supply store.

Eventually, though, Scott and Barda have the inevitable discussion concerning the fate of their son. Scott, while somewhat apprehensive, believes handing Jacob over to Darkseid might be the most reasonable option. Barda, on the other hand, refuses to subject her child to the same type of life she and Scott had growing up in the fiery pits of Apokolips.

However, by the time we reach the end of the issue, a touching, if not somewhat bizarre conversation with Funky Flashman seems to cause Scott to have a change of heart.

“I thought about it,” Scott tells Barda after putting Jacob down for a nap. “This war. [Darkseid’s] going to win.”

“So I’m going to bring Jacob to him,” Scott continues. “But when the moment comes. When he’s right there with me. Instead of giving him the kid… I’m just going to kill my father.”

While Scott is unsure whether he can successfully kill his adopted father, he does bring up the prophecy which states Darkseid can only be defeated for good at the hands of his son. Can Scott, as the adopted son of Darkseid, fulfill this prophecy?

Either way, with only two issues of Mister Miracle left, it appears we’re rapidly approaching the climax of the war between New Genesis and Apokolips.
