SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Mister Miracle #10, by Tom King, Mitch Gerads and Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

Created by Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis, the Justice League International, or JLI, holds a very special place in the hearts of longtime DC Comics readers.

Unlike the traditional Justice League of America, the JLI took a more global and regulated approach to superheroics, and the team’s roster featured some of the DC Universe’s most popular first and second tier characters. However, while the incarnation of the JLI most readers remember hasn’t been seen since pre-New 52, Mister Miracle #10 gives us a much appreciated, if not somewhat dark, reunion of three of the team’s mainstays: Scott Free, Ted Kord and Booster Gold.

After returning home from Apokolips, Scott heads to a bar and attempts to drown his sorrows in Old Fashioneds. At first, all we see is the cocktail but, as evidenced by the word balloons, the World’s Greatest Escape artist isn’t alone.

“I just need a color,” Scott says. “Then we can go off and be a team.”

“Blue and gold!” he continues. “And red! And green! And yellow…”

On the next page, we find Scott, Ted and Booster standing outside of the bar while Scott tries to Uber himself a Boom Tube home. As they’re waiting, though, the trio’s laughter turns to lament (we even get a sad spin on the JLI’s trademark “Bwah-hah-ha”), with Scott now reflecting on the hefty ultimatum Darkseid imposed on him and Barda in Issue #9: Give the tyrant custody of the pair’s son Jacob and bring an end to the war, or continue fighting the losing battle against Apokolips.

It’s certainly a poignant moment and, presumably, not what readers would have expected from a JLI reunion. Nevertheless, seeing Ted and Booster drunkenly attempt to comfort their longtime friend in his time of need proves that even after a reboot and a Rebirth, the bond between these three heroes is still rock solid.
