Not only is Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir known for its riveting heroics, but the animated series also provides viewers with a diverse cast of relatable characters. The phrase "there's something for everyone" aptly describes Miraculous Ladybug's array of superheroes and heroines. In addition to incorporating a wide variety of ethnicities and personalities, Miraculous Ladybug's LGBTQ+ representation is also shown through its inclusive characters.

As is common practice within fandoms, characters are given identities based on visual clues, mannerisms, or interactions with other characters. When a fan theory is proposed and gains traction, sometimes it will be integrated into the "canon" and is unofficially agreed upon by speculative fans. Thomas Astruc, the creator of Miraculous Ladybug, represented the LGBTQ+ community either by basing certain characters on friends who self-identify outside the binary, or simply by entertaining fan suggestions and confirming a few as fact. Either way, here are all the confirmed Miraculous Ladybug LGBTQ+ characters.

Updated on September 14, 2023 by Ajay Aravind: Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir is one of the first kids' shows to incorporate characters from across the gender-sexuality spectrum. Recognizing LGBTQ+ representation has never been more necessary than it is today — and while there's still a long way to go, shows like Miraculous Ladybug help establish an important precedent for the future. That said, a few characters like Wayhem are yet to be officially confirmed as queer, even if fans strongly believe in the possibility. As such, we've updated this list to include more recently confirmed LGBTQ+ characters.

9 Marc Anciel

Androgynous/LGBTQ+

Marc is one of the most awkwardly endearing characters in Miraculous Ladybug. Astruc has revealed in a since-deleted tweet that Marc Anciel was based on a friend named Hope Morphin, who is genderfluid and bisexual. Marc himself is not confirmed genderfluid, but Astruc mentions the term androgyny and states that Marc is a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

However, he has never specified Marc's sexuality, or whether the term "androgynous" refers to gender fluidity or something else entirely. Fans have tossed around the gay/bisexual label for Marc, given his fondness for Nathaniel Kurtzberg. From what we have seen, Marc has not had any romantic involvement with women. In the Season 4 episode "Hack-San," when Robostus commands a mind-controlled Marc to give him his most precious possession, he sacrifices Nathaniel to the villain's digital prison.

8 Nathaniel Kurtzberg

LGBTQ+

The biggest question fans have is, "Are Marc and Nathaniel dating?" Astruc announced during a Twitter Q&A session that Nathaniel and Marc are an official couple. A curious fan asked what Astruc's favorite ship was, to which he replied, "I like all of them, it's hard to choose, but the most complex to create and also most interesting, is the one between Nathaniel and Marc."

Although Astruc has not yet given any word about Nathaniel's sexuality, Miraculous Ladybug speaks for itself. In earlier seasons, Nathaniel had a crush on Ladybug, aka Marinette. However, when it came to light that Marinette had a crush on Adrien, Nathaniel gradually lost his interest in Ladybug. His attraction to at least two (possibly more) genders indicates Nathaniel is a member of the LGBTQ+ community. In other words, he could be either bisexual or pansexual.

7 Juleka Couffaine

Lesbian

Juleka Couffaine, twin sister to Luka Couffaine, has been a fan-favorite character since Miraculous Ladybug premiered in 2015. She's extremely shy, reserved, and taciturn, and doesn't like expressing her feelings any more than the situation demands. As a result, Juleka inadvertently becomes a wallflower who watches the world pass her by. When it comes to her sexuality, Juleka has yet to display romantic interest in anyone besides her classmate Rose Lavillant. It was widely assumed by fans that Juleka identifies as lesbian, and has been romantically involved with Rose for some time. That has since been confirmed as true in a tweet by Astruc in response to a fan question. The tweet loosely translates to, "If you see it like that, it's pretty much obvious, isn't it?"

6 Rose Lavillant

LGBTQ+

Rose's optimistic and upbeat nature garners friends very easily, especially when she goes out of her way to offer help and assistance. The Season 4 episode "Guiltrip" later revealed that Rose has had an unknown illness since early childhood. She has only told Juleka about it, demonstrating a strong bond of trust between the two.

In "Princess Fragrance," Rose's obsession with a visitor named Prince Ali leads to her "akumatization" into the villain Guiltrip. Both of those factors could suggest an attraction to multiple genders, which places Rose under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, much like Nathaniel. Given the fury that arose upon her rejection by Prince Ali, it can be assumed that Rose had a crush on him — or, at least, she found him attractive. Fans have deduced that Rose is most likely bisexual. Astruc confirmed her relationship with Juleka, but has yet to establish her sexuality.

5 Alix Kubdel

Aromantic

Alix is a classic tomboy, an outdated term for women and girls who exhibit stereotypically masculine tendencies. Her courage and certainty can occasionally spill over into daredevilry, but she's a good person at heart. On Twitter, Astruc confirmed that Alix Kubdel is aromantic, meaning she doesn't experience romantic attraction.

When answering fan questions, he stated, "On va dire que Max est plutôt ace et Alix plutôt aro." This translates to "Let’s say that Max is kind of ace and Alix kind of aro..." (the shortened term for aromantic is "aro," whereas the shortened term for asexual is "ace"). Additionally, the official Miraculous Ladybug website states that "above all, she (Alix) is a committed rebel who stands for gender equality." Although not confirmed, this statement could also hint at Alix having an identity outside the gender binary.

4 Max Kanté

Asexual

Max is a massive geek, a personality trait he wears like a badge of honor. His knowledge of tech innovations and gaming culture is far beyond his years, although he can get a little too competitive when prizes are involved. In the same tweet that Astruc confirmed Alix to be aromantic, he also established that Max Kanté is (somewhat) asexual, meaning that he does not experience sexual attraction. Max's characteristics do relate to some untrue stereotypes surrounding asexual individuals, including the "nerd" persona, which is commonly misjudged as an introverted and independent personality type. So far, Max has not shown romantic inclinations toward any other Miraculous Ladybug character.

3 Zoé Lee

LGBTQ+

Zoé Lee is one of the most recent Miraculous Ladybug characters to be confirmed as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. She wants nothing more than to work in movies, given her natural talent for acting. That said, Zoé eventually realizes that she's been pretending to be someone else for a long time, as seen in Season 5's "Adoration."

In this episode, she comes to terms with her antagonistic relationship with Chloé, while also showcasing her feelings for Marinette. Interestingly, Marinette initially believes that she's "in love with Adrien," until Zoé silently reveals that she actually loves Marinette. Fans were delighted by this canonical confirmation of Zoé as an LGBTQ+ character.

2 Gisèle And Caline

Lesbian

Gisèle whispering sweet nothings into Caline's ear

Youngsters aren't the only LGBTQ+ characters in Miraculous Ladybug. Caline Bustier used to teach at Collège Françoise Dupont, where some of the main characters go to school, until she was unjustly let go from her teaching position. Thankfully, with help from her girlfriend Gisèle, Caline has managed to shed her insecurities and run for the position of Mayor of Paris.

That said, Caline and Gisèle couldn't be more different from each other if they tried. While Caline is overtly sympathetic and compassionate, Gisèle comes off as caustic and combative. However, Gisèle is only hostile when she believes her girlfriend hasn't been treated fairly, further cementing their adorable bond. Fans simply can't get enough of all the new LGBTQ+ relationships in Season 5.

1 Olympia Hill And Barbara Keynes

Lesbian

Two of the most serious (and adult) characters in Miraculous Ladybug are also spouses. Barbara Keynes and Olympia Hill have been married for some time, and are currently raising two daughters together. These two characters are also superheroes — Barbara is known as Knight Owl, whereas Olympia goes by Majestia.

They often do battle together, helping keep the city of New York safe from villainous attacks. Unlike most other couples in the show, Barbara and Olympia have experienced enough ups and downs to solidify their relationship. They often argue about how to train their children Aeon and Eagle, but ultimately end up on the same page.

Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir is available to stream on Netflix and Disney+.
