Teens are dressing up in their best suits to go see Minions: The Rise of Gru after years of waiting. The reason for this was a TikTok trend where influencers attend the Minions sequel in groups wearing full suits and making similar poses in the theater.RELATED: Minions: The Rise of Gru Features a Surprising Musical Collaboration

The trend has not gone unnoticed by distributor Universal Pictures, who praised fans for their support of the Minions brand. On July 1, the company's Twitter page wrote "to everyone showing up to [Minions] in suits: we see you and we love you."

Beyond its viral trends, Minions: The Rise of Gru has exceeded commerical expectations at the box office. The film earned $127.9 million in domestic sales for its opening weekend, with an extra $86 million made globally. This tops the previous Independence Day weekend record set by 2011's Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which made $115.9 million upon release.

Minions: The Rise of Gru serves as a follow-up to 2015's Minions, a prequel about the origins of Despicable Me protagonist Gru's yellow, gibberish-speaking henchmen. Minions revealed the Minions are as old as history and instinctively follow whatever figure they deem the most villainous, eventually selecting a young Gru (played again by Steve Carrell) to be their new leader in the film's closing moments. The Rise of Gru sees Gru and the Minions attempt to join a team of villains called the Vicious 6, only for things to go awry during his audition process. Much of the film's trailers, meanwhile, have focused on the Minions' comedic hijinks, including Minions Kevin, Bob and Stuart learning kung-fu from an expert named Master Chow, voiced by Michelle Yeoh.

Alongside Carrell, Yeoh, and a returning Julie Andrews as Gru's Mom, The Rise of Gru features multiple A-list stars voicing the Vicious 6 members. These include Danny Trejo, Taraji P. Henson, Dolph Lundgren, Lucy Lawless, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Alan Arkin.

Produced by Universal Pictures and Illumination, Minions: The Rise of Gru is currently in theaters.
