Pulling in $46.2m at Friday's box office, Universal's "Minions" broke the record for the largest opening day for an animated feature in North America.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, they're on their way to a $121 million weekend, which would push the film to the second-best showing of all time for an animated offering. "Minions" also grossed more than $200 million worldwide, breaking similar records in France and Russia.
Produced by Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment, the animated film traces the history of the little yellow henchmen from the dawn of time to 1968, when they meet superstar villain Scarlet Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock) at Villain-Con. With that encounter, their lives will never be the same, and Scarlet’s may never recover.
Directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, “Minions” traces the history of the little yellow henchmen from the dawn of time to the 1960s. Opening July 10, the film also stars Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney and Steve Coogan.
