Minecraft is receiving a new Batman-themed DLC to celebrate the impending launch of WB Games Montréal's Gotham Knights.

The official Minecraft Twitter account shared the news directly after the DLC pack's announcement during the Minecraft Live event. The update will see the Caped Crusader officially come to Minecraft's blocky universe, along with other select heroes and villains like Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, Harley Quinn, The Joker and Poison Ivy. It will also include an enormous recreation of Gotham City, allowing players to explore and fulfill their various Batman-themed fantasies. The complete DLC set is paid, though all players will receive a free Batman cap to use in the character creator. It will be available for download on all platforms from Oct. 18.

The release of the Batman DLC aligns with the impending release of Gotham Knights on Oct. 28, an action-brawler game that will see the Dark Knight's closest allies take on a consortium of classic villains. The story takes place after Batman's murder and spotlights the Bat Family's fight for justice as they attempt to keep the city safe from itself. Developer WB Games Montréal recently decried the early release of a Gotham Knights strategy guide that leaked critical plot points it had hoped to keep under wraps before the game's official launch.

Despite Gotham Knights handing players control of some of the most iconic faces, fans have expressed reservations over the design of some characters. Social media users were quick to criticize a recent video showcasing Harley Quinn's new look, which sees the villain appear older and more like her ex-lover The Joker. Others have taken aim at characters like Jason Todd / Red Hood for new designs which they claim deviate too far from the source material.

Minecraft is the world's best-selling video game, having shipped over 238 million copies since its launch in 2011. While the game's broad creative tools and sandbox nature have meant Batman characters have appeared in a limited capacity before, the new DLC will be the first time they have been featured in an official capacity. Players regularly create and publish remarkable projects using Minecraft's sprawling mechanics, including the construction of Pokémon's nine regions complete with gyms, wild routes and NPCs. Another innovative creation that gained much traction online was a fully-working Minecraft version of Microsoft Paint, which allowed players to "use" the program in their home worlds.

Minecraft is available on most console and mobile devices. Gotham Knights launches for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on Oct. 28.
