Despite consistently positive responses from critics and audiences, Netflix's Mindhunter was placed on an indefinite hiatus after two seasons.

According to Small Screen's Edward Lauder, that hiatus may soon be coming to an end. Lauder reported that a source close to Netflix indicated as much and suggested that Netflix and series executive producer David Fincher are currently in discussions to bring the show back. "All I can really tell you about Mindhunter is that conversations between Netflix and Fincher are ongoing. They are discussing the possibility of bringing the show back for a third season. It's still very early days, but Fincher sounds more upbeat about the project."

Mindhunter cast members were released from their contracts in January of 2020. Since then, the series has been considered a shelved project. On top of serving as EP, Fincher has directed several episodes in both seasons of the Netflix series.

Fincher previously stated in an interview that some of the problems that put the show on the shelf included the show's scale and the workload required. He turned season 2 over to one of the assistant directors of the show, Courtenay Miles, to lessen that load, explaining, "It's a 90-hour workweek. It absorbs everything in your life. When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, 'I don't know if I have it in me right now to break season three.'"

After Season 2 Fincher said he spoke with Cindy Holland, Netflix's VP for original content at the time, and CEO Ted Sarandos about the next steps for the director. "Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was a very expensive show. We talked about, 'Finish Mank and then see how you feel,' but I honestly don't think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic — dollars have to equal eyeballs."

Based on the work of one of the first criminal profilers John E. Douglas, the series follows FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff), Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) and psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv) throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

The first season of Mindhunter premiered in 2017, returned in 2019 and was nominated for several awards. The series stars Jonathan Groff, Anna Torv, Holt McCallany and Stacey Roca. Both seasons are now available for streaming on Netflix.
