Netflix's Mindhunter has been put on an indefinite hiatus as director David Fincher moves on to focus on other projects. As a result, the cast of the series has been released from their contracts.

"David is focused on directing his first Netflix film Mank and on producing the second season of Love, Death and Robots," said Netflix in a statement to EW. "He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn't fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own."

The series follows members of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit as they interview the nation’s most infamous serial killers and struggle to better understand their psychologies. Season 2 focused on famed psychopaths Charles Manson, David Berkowitz and Atlanta's Wayne Williams.

Mindhunter, which debuted in 2017 to rave reviews, is based on the books by real-life FBI profiler John Douglas. While Fincher's off exploring new work, his cast will be busy with their own new projects. Groff is set to join the cast of The Matrix 4, while McCallany has signed on for Guillermo del Toro's noir remake Nightmare Alley.

Season 2 of Mindhunter is now streaming on Netflix, starring Jonathan Groff, Anna Torv, Holt McCallany and Stacey Roca.
