Marvel teases the return of the Ultimate Universe in an upcoming issue of Miles Morales: Spider-Man.

In March, Spider-Man and Shift will become lost in the multiverse after encountering the Assessor, an artificial intelligence that experiments on people like livestock. Marvel's solicit text for Miles Morales: Spider-Man #36, written by Saladin Ahmed and drawn by Chris Allen, teases that the journey could be a one-way trip as Miles prepares to risk everything while searching for something secret. Though the full scale of the story remains a massive mystery, Taurin Clarke's cover for the issue teases a possible destination for the two. Seen among the various realities is Earth-1610, better known to fans as the Ultimate Universe -- the original home of Miles Morales.

The Ultimate Universe first appeared in Ultimate Spider-Man #1 by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley. It was the home of a line of titles created by Marvel to modernize its characters for the new millennium, featuring a streamlined continuity and distinct characterizations of various heroes, like the Ultimates operating in place of the Avengers.

One of the line's signature creations was Miles Morales, who replaced Peter Parker as Spider-Man after the latter's death. Ultimately, sales for the imprint began to dwindle, leading Marvel to destroy the universe in 2015's Secret Wars. Since then, the main characters from the Ultimate Universe have been largely missing in action, with only Miles and a select few characters popping up on Earth-616. Miles Morales: Spider-Man #36 could change that, as the cover shows Ultimates members Captain America, Thor and Iron Man floating in the ether of time and space.

This cover isn't the first time that Marvel has teased the return of the Ultimate Universe. Though the reality seemingly merged with Earth-616 in the wake of Secret Wars, Miles and other characters who originally came from there have shown that they have vague memories of their world. These connections became a critical plot point in 2018's Venom series, where the Maker (a.k.a. Reed Richards of Earth-1610) experimented on the Ultimate Venom symbiote.

While the mainstream Miles prepares for a multiversal journey, What If... Miles Morales will explore the hero's counterparts. The five-issue miniseries will reveal realities in which Miles chose to pick up the mantle of somebody other than Spider-Man, such as a world in which Miles becomes Captain America. Each issue of What If... Miles Morales is being written and drawn by a different creative team, beginning with Cody Ziglar and Paco Medina in March.
