Fenton died at the age of 85, according to Deadline. He was known for serving as casting director on such iconic films as One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Godfather: Part 2, Footloose, and A Christmas Story.

In the 1960s, his career began with television series such as That Girl, The Andy Griffith Show, and I Spy. Many science fiction and adventure films of the 1980s, including The Goonies, E.T., Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Arc, Blade Runner, Back to the Future, Short Circuit and Superman III, credit Fenton as their casting director.

His final credited project was Sharknado 2: The Second One, in 2014.

Fenton was one of the founders of the Casting Society of America (originally called the American Society of Casting Directors). He earned 11 career CSA Award nominations and won the award twice, as well as the Hoyt Bowers Award for lifetime achievement.

Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg worked with Fenton on many projects. At the news of Fenton's death, Spielberg paid tribute to his character and his reputation in the industry, saying, "His fervent support of actors was the stuff of legend, and after landing a part, any actor’s smile was rarely as wide as Mike’s. He didn’t just support actors, he launched crusades."
