It’ll be a while still before Netflix’s “Luke Cage” series debuts — “Daredevil” launches next month, and “A.K.A. Jessica Jones” is now filming — but the actor cast in the title role has already shared some insight as to what fans might expect, in an interview with IGN. Specifically, Mike Colter — announced by Marvel to be playing Luke Cage last December — said that the show will be “geared towards a more adult audience” than Marvel Studios’ big-screen fare.
“It’s geared towards an adult audience, which is something that will be different from the Marvel Cinematic Universe you’ve seen before on the big screen,” Colter told IGN. “We have a more gritty, focused story on our heroes and characters that live in New York City, but it’s geared towards a more adult audience and I think that’s the thing about the series that will be different.”
Colter also addressed the significance of race to his portrayal of Luke Cage, a character who, when introduced in 1972 by Archie Goodwin and John Romita Sr., was one of very few Black superheroes in mainstream comic books. The actor said he was “color blind to a certain degree,” while “very aware” of important contemporary racial issues.
“The approach with the character for me is more about the human qualities and the things that make Luke Cage tick,” Colter said. “And the writers have to then decide to bring in the race of the character, if there’s an angle there. But I don’t look at it as something I have to prep differently for, because I am what I am and I approach the characters as they have to then be played by me, Mike Colter — the actor who happens to be black.”
Colter will first be seen as Luke Cage in “A.K.A. Jessica Jones,” which is currently in production. A release date has not yet been announced for that series, leaving 2016 as likely the earliest point viewers will see the “Luke Cage” series. In traditional Netflix style, all 13 episodes of “Daredevil” are set to debut simultaneously on the streaming service, with a set date of April 10.
