Miitopia features tons of unique costumes for a player's Miis that let players add even more customization into an already incredibly customizable game. The Amiibo functionality in the game lets players scan certain Amiibo to get unique costumes of some of their favorite Nintendo characters. The way Amiibos work in Miitopia isn't explained incredibly well, so here's how the Amiibo scanning feature works and what players can expect to unlock.

Amiibos can be scanned after players reach the Nintendo Fan in the game's first world. The Nintendo fan should be located past the first two encounters after leaving Easin Hills, making them available pretty early. They're easily recognizable by the Mario costume they'll be wearing, though the actual Mii's appearance is up to the player, much like many NPCs in Miitopia. Speaking with them for the first time will start a somewhat lengthy dialogue that'll end with them asking if the player has any Amiibo to show them.

At this point, players can say yes to scan a single Amiibo to receive either a special costume or three arcade tickets. This is incredibly useful to do as soon as possible since playing the game's arcade is a great way to get gold and travel tickets early on. There's no limit to the number of Amiibos that can be scanned in one go, and once an Amiibo is scanned, it cannot be scanned again.

As for the unique costumes, there are 26 known Mii costumes available to unlock, with each requiring a different character's Amiibo. It is currently unknown if support for upcoming Amiibos will be added with the full version of Miitopia or in future updates. Amiibo cards or Nintendo World bands, both of which can usually be supplemented for Amiibos in other games, do not work in Miitopia and won't even award arcade tickets.

Varients of certain Amiibos will also work, such as the Gold Mario Amiibo or Donkey Kong and Bowser's Skylander figures. Most iconic Nintendo characters can be expected to have Amiibo costumes, such as Mario, Luigi, Link, Zelda and even Kirby. There do not appear to be any third-party character costumes that can be unlocked with Amiibos, nor are there any non-Nintendo properties represented.

Amiibo costumes can be worn by any character, regardless of their class. Amiibo costumes will always have an armor rating of fifteen, making them pretty poor armor even for the early game. That being said, they can always be worn in the cosmetic slot instead, providing far more customization to the amazing Miis people have made using Miitopia's editor.

The only other reward for scanning Amiibos is the previously mentioned arcade tickets. This makes scanning Amiibos that won't give a costume incredibly worthwhile since the arcade is a great way to farm money and items early on quickly. There's really not much of a point in waiting to scan Amiibo since they'll still provide the same rewards later into Miitopia as they do at the start of the game, so there's no better time than now to get started.

Developed by Grezzo and published by Nintendo, Miitopia is available now for Nintendo Switch.
