Part One of Critical Role’s two-part special The Mighty Nein Reunited reintroduced the threat of Uk’otoa by handing the leviathan the final key to his ascension.

A year and change after the finale of its second Dungeons & Dragons campaign, Critical Role brought the Mighty Nein adventuring party back together in a special that streamed both online and in select Cinemark Theaters. Part One spent time catching fans up on the lives of the beloved heroes including Fjord, Jester Lavorre, and Kingsley Tealeaf aboard the Nein Heroez where they encountered Uk'otoa. Cornered at sea by minions of the leviathan deity, Fjord was persuaded to relinquish the Cloven Crystal, the third and final key to Uk’otoa’s ascent.

The Menace of Uk'otoa

As a newcomer of sorts, Taliesin Jaffe’s Kingsley was given a rundown on the party's history with Uk’otoa. The former patron of Travis Willingham’s Fjord sought freedom from his prison beneath the Lucidian Ocean, a goal which Fjord thwarted by holding onto the Cloven Crystal. Prior to the attack and subsequent destruction of the Nein Heroez, fans were treated to the familiar menacing whisper and towering yellow eyes that represent Uk'otoa as he confronted Fjord. Relinquishing the Cloven Crystal meant Uk'otoa posed an immediate threat to Exandria and brought an urgent need for the Mighty Nein to regroup.

Fans online and in theaters were excited to see this threat reemerge as an impetus to bring the Mighty Nein back together. However, missing characters such as Caduceus Clay and Essek Thelyss loomed large in Critter conversation. Defeating Uk’otoa promises to take the Critical Role cast more than one session, so the second portion of the evening saw the party preparing for the coming encounter.

In the greater landscape of Critical Role media, the iconic Mighty Nein foe inspired the company’s first tabletop board game. Critical Role developed Uk’otoa through its publishing group Darrington Press, the collaborative tabletop game taking players on a high-seas adventure in a reality where Uk’otoa has been freed from his oceanic prison. A similar reality may be fast approaching the Mighty Nein in the second portion of their two-part reunion special.

While the Mighty Nein dispatch the threat of Uk’otoa, Critical Role’s current Campaign Three adventuring party, Bells Hells, have gone on a brief hiatus and will return in December.

The race against Uk’otoa will continue for the Mighty Nein on Thursday, December 1 at 7 PT on Twitch, YouTube, and in selected Cinemark theaters
