The following contains major spoilers for Midnight Suns #1, available now from Marvel Comics.

Midnight Suns #1 (by Ethan Sacks, Luigi Zagaria, Antonio Fabela, Carlos Lao, and VC's Joe Sabino) has brought together some of the darkest heroes in the Marvel Universe, all to face down a supernatural threat that none of them have even begun to comprehend. What the Midnight Suns do know, however, is that everything rests on the shoulders of one of Doctor Strange's most intriguing pupils -- Zoe Laveau.

Of course, just because Zoe is caught in the middle of some ominous prophecy doesn't mean she is willing to step into whatever role is supposedly destined for her. Thankfully, she does have the best lineup of mentors she could have possibly asked for, no matter what direction fate decides to pull her next. Now is the perfect time for Zoe to get reacquainted with every single one of them.

Blade

midnight suns 1 blade now class

Eric Brooks, better known as the Daywalker, the Vampire Hunter, or simply Blade, has been an integral part of the Marvel Universe ever since his first appearance all the way back in 1973's Tomb of Dracula #10 (by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan). When Blade's mother was attacked by the vampire menace Deacon Frost during birth, his own blood was tainted, but not transformed. Instead of being born a creature of the night, he emerged as a Dhampir, a being with all of a vampire's strengths and few if any of their weaknesses. Over the years Blade has teamed up with just about every hero and faced unimaginable horrors, including as a member of Earth's Mightiest Heroes and his tenure as a founding member of the original Midnight Sons.

Magik

Illyana Rasputin swinging her Soulsword as Magik

For much of Illyana Rasputina's life following her introduction in 1975's Giant-Size X-Men #1 (by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum), she was the meek and timid little sister of the titular team's Piotr Rasputin, aka Colossus. Not all that long after, the young Illyana was taken captive by the demon Belasco, who whisked her away to Limbo where part of her soul was reforged into an immensely powerful Bloodstone. Since then, Illyana has reforged even more of herself into the now iconic Soulsword as Magik, reigned over Limbo as the Darkchylde, and proven time and time again to be among the most powerful mutants on Krakoa, let alone a Master of the Mystic Arts.

Nico Minoru

runaways cover feature nico minoru - marvel comics

Nico Minoru's introduction to the Marvel Universe came alongside that of the rest of her eponymous team of 2003's Runaways #1 (by Brian K. Vaughn and Adrian Alphona). As the leader of the Runaways, Nico saw to it that she and her teammates would make up for as much of their supervillain parents' wrongs as possible. Thanks to her magical birthright, Nico is innately in tune with various mystical forces, but her lack of training has left her relying on her Staff of One to perform the majority of her blood rites. Although she started out less capable than many of her peers, Nico has come into her own as both a mage and a hero, and her presence at Strange Academy put her exactly where the world needed her most when Zoe's prophecy began to come true.

Wolverine

Wolverine running with his claws out in Marvel Comics' Midnight Suns

Wolverine has been a pillar of the Marvel Universe for decades, and while most of his adventures have taken place alongside various X-teams of one form or another, he isn't any stranger to the supernatural. As someone who has faced off against the likes of demonic Spirits of Vengeance, vampires and Death herself -- Wolverine is all too familiar with what threats lurk in the shadows. He also knows what can happen when those sorts of threats go unchecked. Despite having no natural or learned mystical talents of his own to employ on the battlefield, it is hard to imagine anything being able to keep the most brutal X-veteran of all time down for very long.

Spirit Rider

midnight suns 1 spirit rider

First appearing in 2016's Doctor Strange and the Sorcerers Supreme #1 (by Robbie Thompson and Javier Rodriguez), the woman who would become known as the Spirit Rider lived under the name Kushala in the 1800s. When her parents were killed along with many of their fellow Apaches in an attack by the U.S. Army, her fury was felt by a Spirit of Vengeance who bonded with her to become the Demon Rider. Although years of traveling the world in search of a cure for her condition didn't lead Kushala to what she had hoped for, it did result in her becoming the Sorcerer Supreme of her era. This also led to her teaming up with various others of her kind before finding a new home in the present day, as well as some long-lost descendants. Although she has managed to make her way back to her own era on occasion, those treks were thankfully not at any time when the heroes of today have needed her help the most.

Zoe Laveau

midnight suns 1 zoe feature

2020's Strange Academy #1 (by Skottie Young and Humberto Ramos) marked Zoe Laveau's introduction to the Marvel Universe as one of Doctor Strange's first pupils at his New Orleans school. As a descendant of Marie Laveau, Zoe was born with a natural connection to the mystic arts, yet that didn't keep her from struggling to take control of her abilities. In the hopes of claiming her birthright in full, Zoe turned to the mysterious and malevolent Gaslamp, who deals with wishes tainted with dark magic. By the time she realized that she had become addicted to Gaslamp's wares, Zoe's body was left in a grotesque, cadaverous state even after some near-divine intervention. While Zoe has often been one of the most level-headed students at Strange Academy, she has also been prone to outside influence. Now that she is once more, the biggest questions left looming overhead are whether she will end up as the hero or villain of this particular story and whether she will survive long enough to find out.
