What Is the Plot of Midnight Mass?

The story of Midnight Mass is set in a small coastal town called Crockett Island that's already on a thin, distrusting edge with its own citizenry. This is exacerbated further by the reappearance of Riley Flynn, a man who had theretofore been a pariah in the community. Along with Riley is Father Paul, a mysterious but likable priest who quickly becomes fondly regarded in the town.

Father Paul's presence is matched with a variety of apparent miracles and wonders around the town, but it quickly becomes evident to the townspeople that there may be a heavy toll for these events happening to them. Ironically, it's the formerly disgraced Riley that's the one to first become skeptical of Father Paul, with the two becoming something of rivals.

Does Midnight Mass Have a Trailer?

The trailer for Midnight Mass was released by Netflix on Aug. 9, showcasing the sinister, macabre tone. It fits director Mike Flanagan's forte, with the style heavily resembling the works of Stephen King. It eschews anything overtly supernatural so far, as well as jump scares, instead simply setting the stage with a foreboding sense of dread that's sure to make the many characters feel that all is falling apart around them.

Midnight Mass' horror themes and fall release date would make it seem like a shoe-in for the Halloween season, but it's actually coming out just a little bit beforehand. Midnight Mass is now scheduled to release on Netflix on Sept. 24, 2021.
