The Midnight Club creator Mike Flanagan was disappointed by Netflix's decision not to renew the show for a second season, but he isn't leaving fans in the dark about where the story was headed.

In a Tumblr post, Flanagan offered "answers to the unresolved mysteries of Season 1" as well as his plans for Season 2. The blog post includes what the future held for characters like Amesh, whose glioblastoma would be "advancing quickly," and Spence, whose HIV prognosis may have changed in the future due to advancements in treatment. Flanagan also endeavored to unveil mysteries like the truth behind Dr. Stanton's tattoo and bald head, as well as the real identity of Living Shadow, the Shadow, Mirror Man, and Cataract Woman.

Mike Flanagan's Next Project Won't Be for Netflix

News of The Midnight Club's cancelation broke in December after Flanagan and producer Trevor Macy announced they are heading to Amazon for a new exclusive series deal. The Midnight Club is Flanagan's fourth production with Netflix after The Haunting of Hill House (2018), The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020), and Midnight Mass (2021). The upcoming The Fall of the House of Usher, a series based on works from Edgar Allan Poe, is poised to come out in 2023 and looks to be Flanagan's final deal with Netflix for the time being.

The Midnight Club debuted on Netflix in fall 2022, just in time for Halloween. The chilling horror series, based on the book of the same name by Christopher Pike, centers on seven terminally ill young adults residing in hospice who meet at midnight every night to tell each other scary stories. As the residents begin to experience supernatural phenomena, they learn about a ritualistic cult operating around their shared home. The series was well-received by critics and viewers alike and landed a spot on CBR's list of best new Netflix shows for October.

News about Flanagan's next project has yet to be revealed, but the director previously went on record saying that "nothing would be a bigger honor" than to adapt Stephen King's multi-volume book series The Dark Tower. In fact, Flanagan admitted he already has an opening for his potential adaptation plotted out, explaining that it would start with a "Lawrence of Arabia-esque landscape with a silhouette in the distance just making his way across the hard pan."

Season 1 of The Midnight Club is available to stream on Netflix.
