Mike Flanagan's latest horror series, The Midnight Club, has sadly been canceled at Netflix after only one season. Based on Christopher Pike's novels, the show was set in the 1990s and focused on a group of terminally ill teenagers at a hospice for teens. Despite its cult following and positive reviews, the series was cut short, perhaps due to Netflix's binge model.

Following the announcement of the cancelation, Flanagan made a Tumblr post answering the series' cliffhangers and giving a sneak peek into what the rest of the show would have looked like. One of the questions left at the end of Season 1 is the identity of the ghosts, Mirror Man and Cataract Woman, and the answer is surprisingly romantic.

Who Are the Ghosts at Brightcliffe?

Based on clues throughout The Midnight Club's first season, the ghosts that Ilonka and Kevin see are the founder of Brightcliffe, Stanley Oscar Freelan, and his wife, Vera Freelan. There were many theories about what this meant, such as that they were haunting their old home, or that Ilonka and Kevin were hallucinating them due to mixing their meds with alcohol, but the true answer is even more interesting.

Flanagan explained that Stanley and Vera were married for a long time, but then she eventually died from dementia. Stanley painted the mural and labyrinth in the basement as ways to help her mood and her memory while she was suffering from dementia, and nobody ever painted over it, which is why it looks the same when the Midnight Club goes down there.

Vera died before Stanley, but they had both been reborn many times since, finding each other in their various lives. Ilonka sees Vera sometimes when she looks at Kevin because Ilonka was Stanley in her past life. Kevin is the reborn version of Vera, so he in turn sees Stanley from time to time when he looks at Ilonka. It's a version of them remembering their past lives when they look at each other.

Are Ilonka and Kevin Soulmates?

Ilonka and Kevin are, in fact, soulmates, Flanagan confirmed. Stanley and Vera have been reborn many times, and they find each other and fall in love again in every life. Because their newest forms, Ilonka and Kevin, were both dying of terminal illnesses, they met up at their original home to find each other again.

Ilonka and Kevin weren't just drawn to each other when they met, but rather they felt that connection because they were on some level remembering each other from their past lives. This is why Ilonka and Kevin thought the other looked familiar when they first met each other, and this could also tie into why the fictional versions of them fall in love in both of their ghost stories.

Ilonka and Kevin didn't know this initially and simply thought that they were meeting and falling in love with each other for the first time, despite all obstacles in their way. As Flanagan revealed in the plans for what would have been the later seasons of The Midnight Club, Kevin was supposed to die in Season 2, then Ilonka would die soon after while remembering her past lives with Kevin in these final moments. They would then go on to find each other again in their next life, but off-screen.

The Midnight Club is available to stream on Netflix.
