Phil Spencer, the Executive Vice President of Gaming at Microsoft, made the announcement at the Game Awards. He noted that studios across the globe, including Microsoft's 15 Xbox game studios, are already working on new games for the next-gen console. One of those games is Ninja Theory's Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II. The trailer, which also debuted at the Game Awards, can be viewed below:

The console is designed for both vertical and horizon placement and features a custom-designed CPU based on AMD’s Zen 2 and Radeon RDNA architecture. Microsoft also promises to speed up load times with an SSD on Xbox Series X. The console will support 8K gaming, frame rates of up to 120 fps in games, ray tracing and variable refresh rate support. The console will also include Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Dynamic Latency Input (DLI).

There are rumors that Microsoft is planning to debut a second new console similar to the Xbox Series X as a part of the "Series." This second console will reportedly be cheaper and less powerful than the Xbox Series X, but Microsoft has yet to confirm these rumors.

The tech company also announced the new Xbox Wireless Controller. The shape and size of the controller have been reconfigured to accommodate a range of people, and it also features a new Share button that will make capturing screenshots and game clips easy and simple. It will be compatible with the Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs, and will be included with every Xbox Series X.

The new console will support backward compatibility across four generations of systems. An Xbox Game Pass will also be available when the console becomes available. The company highlighted that Halo Infinite will be available at launch.

The new console was announced at E3 2019 under the codename Project Scarlett. It will launch in the same time period as Sony's PlayStation 5. Coincidentally, Sony also announced a new controller to go along with its new system.

The Xbox Series X will be available for the 2020 holiday season.
